I was doing some research into the phenomenon of spam a few months ago, and came across
www.spywareinfo.com.
I registered with their forum, and discovered the link here at about that time. It seemed like a good place to hang out, so here I am!

Well I came via some of our old hangout, TechGuy's BB! One of the lovely mods there invited some of us members over when SAF was just being launched. Been here since.

Hi Mikel144,
Was this an Atlanta based newspaper? We've heard that there's an Atlanta paper that publishes our url, but we're not sure how it got there. None of us on the staff has ever requested advertising in print media, other than one of our staff filling up open space on a community mailer in New York. I wonder how our site is getting into newspapers, not that we mind free advertising for this free site.

I was always a little curious about that myself. I'd like to know which paper(s) in particular we made it into.

Well, from the caliber of members I've seen immigrating from there, it's an unfortunate loss for that site. I'm glad all of you have decided to give SAF a try. We may not always be the busiest (We're like 7-Eleven. We may not always be doing business....but we're always open

), but we are growing at a fairly decent pace. Besides, I try to keep in mind "quality...not quantity....". We've seen an excellent line of questions and solutions from our new members. Some of them are real stumpers, too.

We'll always do our very best to offer the best solutions and advice, and maintain our reputation as the most civil board on the Internet.

I inquired about greendive on the Smart Computing web site and was told that he was up here.
Since "GD" has helped me in the past

, I thought I'd check out this site and have been here since.
It IS a GREAT site with a lot less BS than SC and now that my subscription is about to run out, I see no reason to waste the money to renew.
Thanks for all your help,

Morning everybody, a couple months ago, SmartComputing put a new man in charge of monitoring their Question and Answer Board as well as their "Chat Rooms". With little notice or much explanation, he began expelling members from those forums for making post that weren't explicitly computer related. As I'm sure everyone who frequents this board knows, the members had formed a rather strong bonds to each other and had become like family to one another, and yes, occasionally there were disagreements, conflicts, and arguments, just like any good, large family. On the other hand, their board, as it was then, was dynamic, busy, fun, interesting and friendly with very few, if ever, questions that went unanswered with a workable solution. For some reason that is beyond me, Mr Dave Steen decided that he wanted to change that working relationship between members and make it a cold, heartless board with no personality. Understandably, "the family" didn't think much of these new unwritten rules and began to fuss about it. More members were expelled for voicing their objections. Even as some of the newer or more occasional members ask "Where are some of the regular members that provide such great answers", without explanation, their query would be deleted from the forum. If they persisted in the question, they too were expelled from the Board. I even witnessed one post that was edited, with words removed and new words inserted, changing the meaning of the question to something more agreeable to SmartComputing's new way of managing the Board. I was expelled from the board by suggesting, in a SmartComputing chat room, links to this as well as some other computer help forums. I e-mailed SmartComputing, asking why I was booted from their site and never received a reply.
This was all so outrageous to most of us regulars, that we began communicating, both on SmartComputing's Q&A Board and in message rooms (IM) where we might be able to meet up again in a more open and less restrictive forum. I saw this forum (SAF) posted in those communications and although SmartComputing quickly deleted the post mentioning SAF, we had by then established a strong IM network and began exploring new forums. I, as well several others, headed for this board and have enjoyed the feeling of family here and hope to become part of this group, getting help for our computer problems and contributing with answers and discussion.
Well, thanks for listening to my rant. I look forward to getting to know some of you and participating here on SAF...........ThomasO

I strongly believe in the individualist freedom of "ranting." If you dont like it, go to next post. And I came to SAF while searching for random computer info while studying for my MCSE. Have been hooked on SAF since. Can't beat the quality and modesty combination.

I think i came about this site either through word of mouth or just surfing(maybe a combination of both)
Anyway it is without doubt the BEST site I have ever had the pleasure to visit.
I have visited other sites (which I wont slag off) and I have found them to be cold and “slightly” indifferent to me the user.
I love the clear and precise manner in which your answers are structured, and your ability to encourage users to try fixes that we would not normally even attempt!
Keep up the great work,
some day I hope to be in a position where I can contribute some advice/knowledge to members, but until that day, I will keep recommending your site to my friends and co-workers here in Ireland.

I was one of the SC members that was booted from SC for speaking my mind about Mr. Dave Steen's new policy's there. (Actually I was the 2nd one to be pushed out the door) and was told about this Forum by ThomasO, and have visited almost everyday since then, and have acquired some very valuable tips and information.
I only became a member recently, but have been a constant visitor since I was expelled by "The Other Place", and I see a lot of my old friends and "Family members" here.

Yes, the SC, Q&A Forum is a privilege the subscribers of SmartComputing magazine enjoy. They continue to enforce their attitude of only allowing computer related subject matter on the forum with little tolerance for even light hearted "chat". Although disappointed with the way the "problems" were handled in August with members being expelled without explanation and in some cases for no reason as far as I can see, in their (SC's) defense, they want a simple Question and Answer Board without distractions that come with bickering and disagreements. Unfortunately, the way they chose to resolve the problem and the resulting hard feelings by even some not involved in the ouster resulted in many longtime contributors leaving the forum. As stated in my first post on this subject, we were a large family of friends and it was a difficult divorce when we had to, or chose to leave.

Too bad. I love the Learning Series magazines they put out. They are some of the most informative and useful sources of computer information available. In fact, the only magazines I purchase are Smart Computing Learning Series and MaximumPC.
But, I am really not overly thrilled with bashing another tech site publicly for any reason, whether it's warranted or not. It's certain there was, and is, alot of useful information discussed at the SC forums. I'm not familiar with what went on...or goes on there and would rather not see SAF embroiled in a cross site squabble. This thread was created for the sole purpose of finding out how members found out about this site. Please, let's adhere to that original idea. In any case, we're glad you're all here and find SAF to be informative and friendly.

I found SAF in my list when I did an Internet search for tech support sites. I am a member of the Compaq Communities which is a tech support site as some of you may know. I was not getting too many questions and so I decided to find another tech support site where I could share what I have learned with others and maybe help someone and also maybe I could learn something new.

At the top of the page, under Member Options, Edit Profile info, put it in the Custom member title line.

May 3 2004, 07:55 AM
Hey guys,
The ability to add a custom member title is currently set at 100 posts. We set it that high for some reason, but damned if I can remember that reason now. I think it was to prevent someone from entering something objectionable after only making a few posts. I'll drop it down to 20 posts, and after you've hit that number, the Custom Member Title field will appear at the top of the 'Edit Profile' page.
Cheers

P.S. I'll fix up the open tags on your signature.. not sure how you want it formatted, but I'll give it a shot.
