downtime
I'm using the latest version of za, but everytime I open it, it auto dials. Netstat shows it makes no connections, it's set to manually check for updates, what's up with it? It says services and controller apps want to access the internet, but once it's connected, it doesn't make any connections, and only auto dials when I open za.

Autodial...you mean it checks for updates? Are you sure it is ZA that's autodialing? Or is it that ZA is detecting something else making a connection?

downtime
As soon as I open ZA it dials. If I boot and don't open ZA, nothing. It's not set to check for updates.

Does this look familiar? 'lockup.zonelabs.com'

I'm still trying to find out what may be causing this.....
downtime
No, it's not familiar. I had installed the newest version over the old, and not removed the check from automatically check for updates, and it began the dialup thing. I unchecked it to no effect, then uninstalled, reinstalled, and told it to start clean, unchecked auto update, but it still dials on opening. Maybe an uninstall, a reg cleaning, and reinstall will work. I'll try it in the morning. I'll let you know if it works, John.
Thanks.
downtime
No luck. Uninstalled, did a reg cleaning, reinstalled, open za, it keeps trying to dial, close it, the dialing stops. The warning is services and controller apps is trying to reach 255.255.255.255 for dhcp, but makes no connections once connected. Netstat says nothing is connected.

First, you should uninstall an old version before installing a new version...just for future reference.

I've heard this happens with ZA v.3x, but I'm still trying to pin it down. I use 2.6.362.

If you don't have ZA Pro, then I'm reading you don't need to have minilog.exe. It dials out looking for updates for virus definitions???

Look thru your applications/permissions part of ZA. See what may be given permission to dial out.

Still looking.......

I'm going to try going back to an older version. I didn't change any of the program access, still the same ones, but this dialup thing is more than annoying. I need to cover my behind with the sites stored on my machine now, the ones I'm managing, and it makes me nervous. I'm not keen on a reinstall, I worked 34.5 hours since monday AM, don't have the time, but if it stays like this, I'll have to bite the bullet and take the time. Tell me John, can anyone ever be sure? Damn, they're a gift and a curse.

Hi downtime - I was on the ZA site and I remembered your post. Check this out:

6. Why is ZoneAlarm causing my computer to dial out?

ZoneAlarm is performing a DNS lookup. Normally, ZoneAlarm waits until a user has established an Internet connection before performing the DNS lookup. However, an issue with the most recent ZoneAlarm Pro/Plus and ZoneAlarm releases is that they don't wait for an Internet connection before performing the DNS lookup. On some computers with auto-dialers set up, this look-up may cause the auto-dialer to be invoked. We will correct this in the next release of the products.

7. Why is ZoneAlarm performing a DNS lookup?

ZoneAlarm products perform automatic DNS lookups on any service addresses that a user requests for that session (registration, check-for-update), as well as for any Zone Labs Web destinations a user may go to. In addition to this, when a user adds a new Web site to a Zone, ZoneAlarm does a DNS lookup for that site. But if the DNS name cannot be resolved before the session is over, ZoneAlarm tries again the next session until the information can be established.

Looks like its a bug that will be fixed in the next version.
