"Made in America" by Bill Bryson. If you really want to understand how American culture, language, sports, entertainment, companies, brands etc. etc. etc. developed from the early settlers to the end of the 20th century, this is a must read. I think it should be in every American classroom. It's not like a study book - it's very entertaining. As soon as I finish it, I'm going to start again. I want to memorize it.

The Blue Last by Martha Grimes and still wading through Lorna Doone by R.D. Blackmore, also written over one hundred years ago. I love the wordiness, but it makes for slow reading . I usually have several books going at a time and can choose what I want according to my present frame of mind.

Yippy skippy. I fall asleep about every 3rd page after I have to re-read it 10 times.
I wonder if computer related material like this can get a little drier? I equate it to stopping and sitting at a red traffic light...........for 6 hours, or hand-cleaning a chandelier........with 500 crystals.

I'm reading this monitor screen with these SAF posts right now, and trying to envision Interceptor hand-cleaning a chandelier with 500 crystals. Now that would be a sight! I could more easily envision him getting to about the 20th crystal, getting fed up with the whole thing, and taking an Uzi to it.

Some of you have good taste in books! (Sorry, but I have the attention span of a 2-year old when it comes to tech manuals...)
Right now it's rereads around here:
Native Tongue by Carl Hiaasen,
The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (for about the zillionth time),
and Widow's Walk by Robert Parker.

Technohead when I first began reading the Terry Goodkind books several years back I was less than impressed - thought they lacked originality in a big way. Then he sort of went off in another direction and his books have gotten better and better. Pillars of Creation was good but Faith of the Fallen was
awesome...he really got into a subtle comparison of capitalism and communism in the middle of that one and did it quite well...

Edit - now I read the whole series and like the entire story, so maybe it was just a bad beginning for me...

Just finished "The Cruelest Miles," by Gay and Laney Salisbury. True story of the 700-mile, six-day dogsled relay that saved Nome, Alaska, from a diphtheria epidemic in January 1925. Compelling tale of the remarkable men and dogs who took part in the serum run amid minus-60 temperatures and sunless days.
Strangely, I was inspired to read the book because I grew up and live in NYC, hardly dogsled territory. But there's a famous statue of Balto, one of the serum-run huskies, in Central Park. It was erected a few months after the serum run, which gripped the nation at the time. I knew a bit about the run from the plaque on the statue, but didn't know the details until I read the book.
