My music tastes run a wide spectrum....jazz/blues/70's and 80's rock (the 80's wasn't a great decade in my book), metal, a wee rare bit of alternative. From ABBA to ZZTop...notice C & W isn't really didn't make the cut here.

I'm NOT into the teen music flavor of the week, Britney or those 'pop'/American Idol "bands". They can board the same rocket w/ Alternative and Rap bands for a one way trip to Mars.

Grunge/Alternative is merely that: Altered--and I might add--talentless attempts at rock and roll. Record label
A & R guys all got coked and decided "Hey...why not find the most talentless 'bands', sign them up and let them ride out a week?? Hey--the stoned out kids today won't give a... "...well--you get the picture.

Alt bands try so hard to sound "unique" but in the end--they all wind up sounding the same. Interesting how that happens--and sad too. You know the cycle: "Alternative to Rock N' Roll...so what is it? Alternative? No...I mean: what's the music GENRE?? Sighhhh....I just told you: Alternative!!" And so the cycle goes.

Rock isn't dead--but it's sure taking a severe beatin'!!! smileyshot.gif

Hi Wingnut, wavey.gif

Well, where do I start..........?..... I seem to have similar

tastes to you....jazz/blues/70's and 80's rock ......but,

reading your post, it sounded like my dad when I first

started listening to the Stones...... `bl**dy noise !`

I`m in my fifties now and looking back on the music scene

over the last five decades, I think I was born at the perfect

time as far as music goes. In at the birth of great bands

like (in America).... Grateful dead, Jefferson airplane,

Beautiful day, etc and (in UK)..Beatles,

Stones,Yardbirds..... and it was all fresh and new. Never

been done before........ There are only so many chords to

choose from and sure, certain riffs crop up time and time

again, but now and then, along comes a band that has that

something unique in their sound, (even though they`re playing

similar chords to another song).

I keep up with modern releases because I run a Disco and

some of the `alternative` rock bands get requested from time

to time.... and SOME of it is great.... not just the

alternative rock, either....... I agree with you, most rap

has a capital `C` in front of it, but you`ve got to

appreciate Eminem, if only for breaking the mould of `black

rapping`. some of his songs are inspired.... and to get back

to rock for a minute... Razorlight are a top band, along with

Evanescence, Franz ferdinand, Nickleback and others. It really

depends on what you are looking for. Personally, I like to

hear new stuff that is a progression from the `old stuff`.

You can only progress by being open.

Even other genres I don`t really listen to, have their good

points.`Dance` music didn`t do it for me until I went into

the `dance tent` at T in the park.... and I was hooked !!

A lot of it was `samey`, but some of it was.. hmmmm...Moving.

Again, Hip-hop is not really my cup of tea, but there`ve been

one or two tracks that have had me `moving on the spot`.

Missy Eliot comes to mind...........

Even C&W has its good tracks. Got a great `Dance`version of

Dolly Parton doing 9 to 5 (& stairway to heaven ). biggrin.gif

A great man once said `for those that have ears... let them

hear`

(p.s. This is not a dig at you, wingnut, just a different view)

Hi Angus..."the days that were" is close. My Gaelic is not just rusty, it's totally corroded. biggrin.gif

In the context of the song, it's preceeded by 'Slan' (with a fada over the 'a') which means 'Goodbye'.

Gaelic lyrics and translation here.

What am I listening to? U2's 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb'. Continually. I wasn't really a U2 fan until I listened to this.

Link please ?

I am listening online country music from WMFW http://www.wfmw.net/ListenLive.html (now playing "stand by your man") smile.gif

Normally, I hear RTL Paris online... http://cache.yacast.fr/V4/rtl/rtl_main_V4.htm?id=rtl
jimholly
I saw Trans Siberian Orchestra last year at this time. Unbelievable concert!!. Laser lights, pyrotechnics, snow, flame throwers, and much more - - - all inside the arena! And it was all synchronized perfectly with the music.

BTW, Chris. If you want some really different music, with Celtic, Bluegrass, Classic Country, Big Band, Polka, International, Jazz and more, check out WOBO-FM. It's a small, totally volunteer operated station that exists on donations from the listeners, with all music provided by the volunteers. The only paid employee that the station has is the engineer, and he's part-time. As they put it, it's the "Station with Something for Everyone."

Thanks Jim, nice online stereo radio smile.gif (added to my favs)
Didn't figure that there was a city named "Batavia" in Ohio lol.gif

Thanks Jim. biggrin.gif

It sure would be nice to see 'Trans Siberian Orchestra' It looks like it would be very fascinating. biggrin.gif

Also listening to WOBO biggrin.gif

jimholly
You're both welcome. Batavia is about 30 miles SSE of me. My favorite music is the Bluegrass, and Chris Kelly's program on Saturday morning is the best. LinuxSam is an avid listener of the station, too, especially Patty Shannon Clark's Sunday evening Celtic program. smile.gif

Like the old days of live TV, you'll often hear 'goofs' during the shows. Since most of the DJs aren't pros, they sometimes have a little problem with the equipment. But, you have to admire their dedication and willingness to provide us with some uniquely different programming. Heinz Probst is from Germany, and I believe he is one of the original broadcasters with the station, having been there from the station's beginning.

Cities in Ohio? We've even got towns named Moscow, Paris, Dublin, Dover, Sidney, Salem, Oxford, Holland, Cairo, London, Manchester, Newark, Yorkshire, Alamo, Rome, Ottawa, Orient, Montezuma, Geneva, Macedonia, Lebanon and Lima. It's like travelling the world without ever leaving the state. lol.gif

Sorry, Chris, no Jacareí, Santa Isabel, or Igaratá in Ohio. sad.gif

I listen to Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Steve Miller Band, Led Zepplin, The Eagles, and other classic rock bands. Right now I'm listening to All along the watch tower by Jimi Hendrix

I got the Trans-Siberian orchestra dancing lights with this: http://members.cox.net/transam57/lights.wmv
In my search to find the name of the music, I googled the orchestra name and found out the band actually performed here on a tour a year or so ago. I missed it! cry.gif Maybe now I know what great stuff they do, they'll come back. Won't miss the next one!
Chevy Chase would be green with envy if he saw this house with the rockin', perfectly synchronized, dancing lights!

For the last week or so, I've been waking up with the song An Saighdiur Treighthe on my mind. A lovely, lively, yet gentle song by The Duggans on their album Rubicon.

One or two of you might be wondering if I've worn that album out yet ... clearly not smile.gif the song is on my brain even as I post this.

Just checking back through this thread I now realise I reported the very same song during Feb ... I did have a couple of weeks off from the song, honest! lol.gif
