Never really had the need for this sort of programme, but I just wanted to know if the programme was real or if this was some ploy to allow someone to scan peoples computers?

The problem with content scanners is they have a difficult time scanning the content properly, ie, just because something has the word sex in it doesn't mean it is obscene or objectionable. Other more innocent phrases have been targeted by tools like this, in addition to photos and whatnot. You really don't want to use this tool.
