I've no idea where to post this, but I have a problem. It started only yesterday.

Two times now when I have been connected to this site, keying a message, my system shuts down. It has only occurred on this site. Any suggestions as to what may be going on?

I'm connected with a 56K modem, on a Pentium II 400 system, 320 mgs RAM.

Thanks,

jandruz

Hi jandruz - if it only happens when you are on this site, it really should be in the Site Related Comments Forum. I'm moving it now smile.gif

Hi jandruz. Hmmm...I've never seen a site-related shutdown problem. Usually, this problem is related to overheating or power supply issues.

Try rebooting in MS-DOS mode. At the prompt type:

scanreg /restore > press Enter.

Use the arrow keys to select a registry backup pre-dating the problem (don't use the 5th, or oldest backup if you're using Win98 - it can cause problems).

If you're using WinME and get an error message about scanreg not found, you may have to cd to C:\Windows\Command:

cd c:windows\command > press Enter
scanreg /restore > Enter

Let us know...

As I was writing this post, my system rebooted for the third time while on this site. This is strange to me. This started happening three days ago. Each time I have been writing a post on this site. This system simply reboots on its own. This is the only time it does it. I know this since I have an icon that changes when the system is shut down or rebooted.

To give a little more info, my son just installed a video card in the system: it is a 3D Prophet 4500 with 64 mb RAM. The problem only started after this installation. However, it only happens when I am on SAF.

Any suggestions?

hmm im just wondernig here, but is this shutdown happening after a certain amount of time? SAF fits in aroun 10mins after i turn the PC on, being my routine, so it could be it fits in your routine in such a way.

Condorstats,

Wish I could isolate this to a time problem, but does not seem to be the case. My system, while not connected to the internet runs 24 hrs a day. This site is the only time I am experiencing the reboot problem. And that has always happened when I am trying to post a message.

I agree with HKed, most of the time it is a power or some other issue... however since your system runs 24/7 when your not on SAF there is something else we need to look at.

Is this site related... yes and no. ( I have seen this before but not here.)

What types of programs are you running in the background? SAF uses a good amount of java to make the menus and other items work as they do. Often many of the programs on our systems also use Java. In a not so technical explaination it overloads the system and it reboots. This happen to me regularlly when I used a program called Gozillia. The company never accknowledged a problem however there were a number of users this was a regular problem for.

My suggestions-
So what I might suggest you do is see what happens if you go and turn off any other programs running except for whats needed to run the internet.

Also get a program like window washer or something similar to get rid of any unknown or hidden temp files. For some odd reason this seems to help as well.

What next?
should you be able to stay on SAF without a random reboot(which this is called) we will need toexamine whats running on your system and what is most likely to be the cause of this probelm. If your running Windows XP or 2000 it might list it in the error log.

If my suggestion above fails to fix it... you might want to look at trying to access the site form Netscape or Opera. If you use the opera route it might fix the probelm with the installation of the java pack in the full install.

I could go on but I think you have enough to chew on for right now.

I used to have a problem very simmilar to this a couple years ago but it was any website not just one. I put up with it for almost 3 weeks because I couldn't stay online long enough to download any program or look for a solution to help fix the problem. So I formatted the partition that my OS and programs were installed on and that seemed to fix the prblem. I don't think that it was a particular program that I had because I put all of them back on and never had a reoccurance of the problem.

One of my brothers friends said that it could have been a virus that infected Netscape, which I was running at the time. I don't think yours would be a virus though because it only happens at SAF. Who know's, your computer or internet browser may have an 'alergic' reaction to particular types of forums or some other thing that has to deal with the way SAF was designed. It's easily one of the weirdest things I've heard of and it wouldn't surprise me if something in your computer just didn't like this site.

If you try other browsers and that doesn't work your may want to try updating your current browser to the most resent version. Also you may want to try and re-install the old video card and see if the problem still persists. If that works you may be expiriencing some really awkward driver conflicts and maybe there is still something that didn't get deleted from the old cards drivers and it forces a reset. If you put the old card back in make sure you uninstall the new card completely. When you get around to solving the problem and if you put the new video card back in format and give everything a fresh start or make sure that the old card just gets uninstalled properly.

My best guess is that is has to do with all the small animated gifs on the message entering site.
I know I had the browser crash on me occasionally earlier. (Mozilla in Linux)
But the problem went away with more reacent versions of Mozilla and with changes in the board layout.

that's my two cents.

Might try putting in a little heftier power supply. There could be something about the colors/brightness of the page, or the many icons, like Sam mentioned, that's pulling just a little extra power on the new video card. The new card, with 64 meg. of RAM, will require more power anyway, and you could be just on the verge of overload.
jandruz
Thanks for all the suggestions. Although I don't have the problem resolved, I am leaning toward the power supply. My system came equipped with a 200W and Hercules says the card needs 250 minimum. I've slowed graphic acceleration down for th present and it seems to help another issue: some sproadic fluttering. I'll get a PS and install it and see if this gets the problem.

Thanks

Well if the card says it needs a 250watt PS and your running a 200watt PS then that is your best bet. I'd recomend picking up a 350watt PS just to give you that little buffer.

Well good luck and let us know how it turns out.
jandruz
Since I've not had time to get a PS and have experienced another auto reboot, I have reinstalled my old card. Will see if this fixes the problem and then will get a new PS.

Thanks

maybe reinstall or change to a different video driver. also try IE repair from add/remove programs.

Symptom: Random reboots when visiting java-enabled sites, Internet explorer wants to connect to port ????
Cause: You have aureate/radiate browser "plugin" on your system
Fix: Go to Hkey_Classes_Root\Classes
Delete the {EBBFE27C-BDF0-11D2-BBE5-00609419F467} key
Do a search for and delete amcis.dll
Download ad-aware from www.lavasoft.nu and delete everything marked as aureate/radiate.

while you're at it, go ahead get rid of everything else in the list...you might see things like web3000, webhancer, gator, etc...and also get spybot s&d from http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10122138.html...once you've installed that, click on the "online" button and check for updates...download everything except the language packs (unless you actually use a language other than english)...for those right click and click on "exclude"...then click on the "spybot s&d" button and "check all"...it checks not only for spyware but also keyloggers, some trojans, and even missing or corrupt registry keys and file links...then put a check beside everything you want to fix and "fix all"...you'd be surprised what some of that stuff'll do to ya

Keep the Faith,

Lance
