HI, I was wondering what the latest on this was, is this still a problem? If i were to download the software from kazaa is there anything I should know or should worry about?
Thanx!

Whether you have Kazaa or not, getting Adaware or something like it is a good idea. It's free, and it's good.

Hi:
Hey thanx for the posts! However, if I were to download the software from the Kazaa Site (say last month) and installed it then I would have the spyware software installed as well?

Yep

My Kazaa installer is almost 4 months old and I still have spyware in that. The worst part is that Kazaa wont run unless it detects the spyware is still present. I removed it using adaware and Kazaa stopped running saying that a component required by Kazaa to function was no longer present and that I needed to re-install Kazaa. So sure enough I re-installed Kazaa and it worked but the spyware had returned. If you want Kazaa to work it needs that spyware there. So really there aren't anyways around it anymore.

Not necessarily - read this.
Kazaa Lite can be downloaded from here.

KaZaaLite downloads a dummy file which emulates the cydoor spyware in KaZaa. AdAware used to remove this file (cd_clint.dll) unless configured not to however I understand that the latest release of AdAware knows the difference and does not have to be specially configured to ignore it.

Yep...forgot to mention that. The latest AdAware reflists ignore that DLL.

one other thing to consider, guys and gals...no offense intended, it's all about personal choice, but here's some food for thought...
when you d/l kazaa or kazaa lite, you add to the network, making kazaa more popular...now, i doubt they can tell which version you're running thanx to the dummy file...however, they get tons of newbs every day that don't have a clue about spyware, they just see that kazaa has millions of users and therefore must have tons of music to d/l...therefore, whether you are using kazaa or kazaa lite, you are making kazaa more popular, thus giving them less reason to eliminate the spyware (a major source of their income, i believe), and more reason to believe that we don't care what they do to our pc's...thus, when the next as-yet-unhacked scumware company comes along and drops bags of cash in their lap, they have zero incentive to turn it down...and to bring the kazaa lite users back in the fold, all they have to do is change their software slightly to prevent use of the network unless you have the most recent version (much like morpheus did when they added spyware)...any way, enuf ranting for one night, i just wanted to give y'all something to think about...btw, i do use p2p (winMX), so it's not that i'm anti-p2p, or anti-mp3 exchange...just anti-spyware...when they get the boards back up, you can go to spywareinfo.com and see that i go there almost every day under this name

btw, ironically, the reason morpheus changed their software is because they split from the kazaa network, and went to an inferior gnutella network...the reason they gave you ask?...kazaa's SPYWARE!...now, is that the pot calling the kettle black or what?

Lance...that was quite a good "rant"

, and I absolutely agree with you. I have never used P2P software, and never will. But there will always be users who accept that this is the price you pay for "freeware".
It's the foistware aspect that gets me - if only these buggers that provide the scumware would 'fess up and make it clear that advertising or other malware (New.Net anyone?) comes with the package, things would be a lot easier. Who the heck reads EULAs these days anyway?
BTW, I lurk a lot over at Spywareinfo and have been in touch with Mike Healan. Also
http://www.lurkhere.com is a good site for topics like this (run by an old mate, Renovator, and another Mike who I believe was closely involved with the Voice of the Public site).
