Hi,

I've been infected with virut.n.gen, and probably some other crap in the process. My antivirus suddenly began to report loads of infected files every 5 minutes or so, and at the same time was reported as out of date by windows system security even after I manually updated.

I have Windows XP pro SP3 and McAfee entrerprise virusscan + antispyware 8.5.0i

My thanks in advance for your help

Hi Callista...if this really is Virut, there's no known fix. There is a Norton removal tool, but I haven't seen it work.

Virut is specific to torrent downloads. However, it could also have come from an infected external drive, like a USB pendrive.

Download RSIT to the desktop and run it there. Post the logs it generates. It will give us a better picture of what's running than HijackThis does.

Hi Callista...quite a number of system files have already been infected. The longer Virut is on the system, the more files get infected. It infects all files with EXE and SCR (screensaver) extensions.

Virus scanners cannot deal with Virut, and it can't be removed manually. Backup what you can (don't backup any EXE, SCR or torrent files), format and reinstall. Sorry. beatsme.gif
Callista
I was afraid so.
Now I suspect I have some infected USB keys. Apart from deleting all files on those, is there something I should do?
Anyway, thanks for your help.
HKEd
I'd just format the USB drives and keep them disconnected from the infected machine until you've done the clean install. Virut is a real nasty and it will infect a clean computer from an infected USB drive without anything catching it. You have to regard any torrent download as a potential source, so make sure there are none backed up on any external drives.

Let me know if you need any further help.
Callista
I'm working with 2 HD, 1 for windows and 1 for my other programs, plus I use an ext HD for my stuff. Do I have to format all 3 HD? And if I have to backup stuff on another ext HD, how can I protect it from being infected? confused.gif

Also, I'm not sure how to reformat a USB key
Surfer
hi callista....yes everything needs formatted. for the flash drive right click and select format, choose fat32, fat32ex or ntfs if available. 2 ways to keep from infecting another hard drive. burn your data to a cd/dvd or boot with a linux boot cd and copy the files inside linux. KNOPPIX is one that i've used.
Callista
I don't have linux so I'll make some cd/dvd backups. This will force me to some drastic sorting out, but it's just as well as I have tons of stuff I probably will never use anyway.

I'll disconnect my ext drive and disable my F drive after reformating to be on the safe side, I suppose that should be fine.

Thanks for the help surfer thumb up.gif
Surfer
y'all can d/l knoppix and burn to cd. it's free.
Callista
Thx, I don't know about knoppix, I did all my backups with cdburnerxp which did a good job. I'm finished for today though, I'll reformat tomorrow.
Callista
Allright, I have reformated everything and reinstalled windows. Now the problem is, I have no sound.

I have a ASUS LGA1366 P6T Deluxe motherboard. Device manager shows a "? audio device on high definition audio bus" that has no driver installed (along with "RAID controller", "SM bus controller", and an "unknown device").

Sounds and audio devices show "no audio device". I tried unplugging my speakers, restart comp, replug speakers, to no avail. No new hardware was detected.

I've been searching for hours and don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to install your mainboard and peripheral drivers. These came with your computer when you purchased and are on a separate CD. Most likely you are using the integrated sound with the mainboard, and it needs the drivers to activate. If you don't have this disk (many folks lose theirs over time), go to your manufacturer's website and find your model number; hopefully they will post your chipset and mainboard drivers. Without these you may have other problems in the future.
Callista
Well what do you know, always the same story. You search for something like hell and only when you give up... I finally found my drivers CD that I had misplaced. I think everything's fine now.
My thanks to you guys compute.gif
