HijackThis.exe was not renamed... C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\workwiththis\HijackThis.exe - You renamed the folder instead.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.mcafee.com

Optionally, checkmark the two entries below if you are unsure of them (Desktop components may contain infected images, as they are linked to external urls):

O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - http://www.kroq.com/kevinandbean/images/sights/money/3.jpg

O24 - Desktop Component 1: (no name) - http://mud.mm-a2.yimg.com/image/347288547

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Download Combofix to your desktop by clicking here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
Note:
Disconnect from the internet (unplug the cable), close all windows and any program on your system tray, including your antivirus. Do not mouseclick or type anything while combofix is running. That may cause it to stall.

You can safely ignore warnings about not having the recovery console installed. Run it only once !

Post the Combofix report along with a fresh HJT log.

You must reinstal an antivirus. you can pick a free one from any of those links:

AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
AVAST - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
AntiVir - http://www.free-av.com/

The logs looks now clean. thumb up.gif smile.gif How is your system running ?

Hi Chris-

Thank you so much for your time and your help smile.gif

I have not tried to do systems restore or to start it on safe mode. Those were my main concerns. Everything else seems to be fine. I will download one of the antivirus program you have posted.

Once again thank you for all the help have a wonderful day!
Ironbender
Do not try the system restore ! Some old files in there may be infected.

You are welcome. smile.gif Glad we could help.

You can now uninstall ComboFix.
<Start/Run> type in combofix /u (Enter) -->note that there is a space between combofix and /u
This will remove quarantined files and folders, thus avoiding future antivirus alerts about them.

update java: Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16' or higher and press the 'Download' button.
Reboot when installed.
Uninstall any previous JRE versions from Control Panel, add-remove programs afterward.

Disable/re-enable system restore to avoid future reinfections from restore points: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html

Don't forget to create a new restore point just after.

Thank you! I will follow your instruction.

You'd better stay away from torrents and keygens like RegistryFix7. rolleyes.gif

Hi Chris,

I dont know if this is in the same issue because today in the morning I got the blue screen with a message saying 0x0000009A violated licence agreement. I also tried to use a boot disk but the computer does not recognize the disc. I can not use safe mode, I hace used the F12 key to try to boot from the disk and it just sends me to F2. I dont know what to do I think my computer is done for. sad.gif(

Hi Mary,

this mostly happens when you or a third party program inserts a wrong or invalid license key into the registry... what happened just before this ?

Did you install any program ?
Did you (or someone else) try to crack Windows ?
Do you have an original XP CD to boot from ?

I also found this MS article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192821/en
Are you still using McAfee and did you try to restore a backup of your registry ?

My computer had a malaware problem again that is why I initialy contacted to have the thread reopened. After that I tried running all the programs you had instructed me to run the first time around only this time I couldnt. A window would pop up saying the programs (malware bytes, hack this ) were infected and could not open. I tried to restore the programs by doing systems restore to the day you had said my system was all clean. I found that I was no longer considered an administrator and could not acess the systems restore. I took the computer off the internet and sent you the message for help from another computer. Since I couldnt use the computer I shut it down to prevent further damage to the computer. When I turned it on in the morning the computer screen came up blue.

I think I have all the CDs for the system its a Dell 3000. When I insert the disk and try to boot (F12). It asks me what I want to boot from I choose the disk option but then it just asks to continue press F1 to go to sytems press F2. If I press F1 it goes to the menu that asks if I want to start the computer normal or safe mode. If I choose anything on that menu it just gives me the blue screen. If I choose F2 it sends me to systems where I can change things but I dont know what it is so I dont want to touch it. I hit esc and end up in the same plcae as before with a blue screen.

Well, this sounds very bad, I fear... sad.gif If you picked a Virut, it may have infected all your .exe files and there is a very little chance to clean it without reformatting...

You have to enter the BIOS setup utility (F2), go to boot section, change the boot order to:
First boot device: CD/DVD-ROM;
All other boot devices: Disabled. This will prevent the system to access the HD.

Save changes and exit.
Insert your XP CD and try a repair-install as described here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/h...ips/doug92.mspx

Note that, as soon of Windows first asks to restart, you'll need to enter Setup again and set the boot order to:
First boot device: HDD0 (or your Hard Disk);
Second boot device: CD/DVD-ROM. Otherwise, you'll be stuck on a loop.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Chris,

Thank you so much for your effort smile.gif . I have tried doing as you suggested and have had no luck at this point. I am just going to have to buy a new computer. Please go ahead and close the thread my computer is gone sad.gif .

Mary

It's not gone. The Operating System is corrupt, so a Windows repair or fresh install may be easily done by any tech. You may be doing something wrong... beatsme.gif

If the hard disk itself was bad (which I don't think), it could be easily replaced.

Chris
