I just recently replaced my 200 gig ide harddrive with a 1 TB SATA hardrive, as my old one kicked the bucket. I have reinstalled windows xp and all drivers and got everything working. It is working better than ever ,as my old harddrive was sluggish for some time before it died. But now i am unable to play any 3d games. They boot up fine ,but whenever anything is rendererd in 3d it hangs at random intervals for a good 10-15 seconds then continues for a few seconds and hangs again. I have tried half life 2, swat 4 and ceaser 4. Swat 4 even hangs in the menu screen, though i believe thats because objects are rendered behind the menu. Half life hangs and repeats sounds while hanging. Ceaser 4 also hangs and eventually crashes my display drivers.

I have tried shutting down all extraneous programs. It is a fresh windows xp install fully updated with all protection installed so virisus and mal ware are not a problem. All drivers have been updated, and so has directx. I have also checked the temp of my processor before during and after the problem. My video card doesnt have a temp sensor , but i have opened the side of my case and put an industrial fan blowing on high into it, with no changes. Changing any in game geaphic settings seems to have no effect also.I have also run a memeory test with no errors. I was able to find my GPU temp using everest it is normal.

yes i have tried the 190.62 drivers. I have also uninstalled those drivers and tried the older 180 drivers . neither worked any different.

did these games run well before now?

yes. In fact my computer ran terrible before on a count of the hard drive was , as I know now, going bad. all these game and any other,providing they were not buggy to begin with, ran fine before i installed the new drive and reinstalled windows.

have the chipset drivers been reinstalled?

yes every driver i could think of and some i didnt think off has been installed or updated. I used drivermax to find any that i missed

are all this problems occur only when playing games? have you inststalled AMD dual core optimizer?

Yes only happens in games that i know of, and only when something is rendered in 3d. I had this problem both before and after i installed the dual core optimizer.

As far as the hot fix goes it doesn't seem to be relevant any more as the dual core optimizer has been updated and some of the links in those directions are no longer any good. Plus i am not experiencing the problem that hotfix is suppose to fix.

I figured what the heck, It cant hurt so i googled the hotfix and did the install edited my boot.ini and all. Still no change

anyways, heres what i did on all my AMD dual core machines at my internet cafe(my small business bydway lol):

1. apply WindowsXP-KB896256-v4-x86-ENU.exe and reboot

2.[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Throttle]
"PerfEnablePackageIdle"=dword:00000001

copy on a notepad and rename to Entry.reg then merge and reboot after merging

3.install AMD dual core optimizer reboot

also check those little things such as:
check the sata cables make sure its not loose, PSU make sure it meets your system power requirement and video card make sure its not busted.

yes , that hot fix. you no longer have to manually enter the registry entry. I double checked just in case its there.Though the install guide i used did tell me to edit my boot.ini with a new entry.
yes checked all cables , i even removed and reinstalled the cpu, memory and videocard and checked them out. no visible issues.
I am pretty much at a loss as to what is going on. as far as i can figure i need to either reinstall windows again for some reason or i have some kind of hardware breakage.Though it was working before so i am going to try reinstalling and updating windows again and see what happens.

So after trying everything under the sun including reinstalling windows again. I have concluded that the only thing left is the sata drive itself. Since it is the only thing different on my system .I read a couple posts on the web from people saying they have the same issue, but have found no solution. Anyone heard of any fix for sata drives not playing games with geforce video cards, or anything like that?

yes, unfortunately western digital doesnt have a forum or its down at the moment. I sent them an e-mail. I should get an answer tomorrow i hope. In the meantime i am going to try and scrounge up an old ide drive and check it.

I found an old 60 gig ide drive to use. I got it working and it does the same thing. So its not the hard drive. Must be the video card, memory or motherboard i guess. I will probably borrow a video card from someone and check that next, as i did a memcheck and the motherboard is a little hard to check.

I am not sure. but i have had both the nforce drivers from my disk and the most up to date nforce drivers installed . in my first attempt to fix this i updated every driver there is using drivermax.How would one fo about finding out wich nforce drivers are installed at the moment?I cant seem to locate it in the device manager.

Have you tried reducing the complexity of the system in order to make it easier to identify the offending component ?

I'd strip it down to the bare minimum. That means just motherboard & CPU, video card, 1 stick of RAM, 1 Hard Drive, no addon sound card (onboard audio if you have it or no-audio). Unplug everything else.

If it works fine then, start adding things back one at a time testing between adding individual devices.

I havnt been able to come up with a video card to try but, I downloaded a program that tests your 3d apps (ATItool). when i used the test for artifacts function my computer did the same exact thing it does during games. Does this mean anything to anyone?

I broke down and purchased a new video card. It is working fine now. Looks like my card just kicked the bucket at the same time as my hard drive
