Hello
I have a brother who is trying to access his landlords internet connection with permission of course. He installed a wireless Linksys router in her upstairs part of the house. She has a USB connection from the back of modem to her computer. My brother ran an Ethernet cable from back of modem to the wireless router. In my brothers apt. downstairs he bought a USB wireless Ethernet connector. When he ran the CD setup on the landlords computer it said it had to update Windows. (I am assuming it is running Win 98 or maybe even Win 95)
Can my brother do anything from his end to try and get a connection seeing how everything is in place (the router and wireless USB connector on his computer)? the landlord is never home and he has a hard time catching her to make corrections.
Thanks and any help would be greatly appreciated
It is an Optimum cable connection coming into the house if it maters

unplug the usb connection from the modem to the lanlords computer, take the ethernet cable that goes from the modem to the WAN port on the router, that is ok, now take another cat5 cable and run it from one of the lan ports to the landlorde pc.
On the landlords pc, click start/run type in cmd. hit enter. then type ipconfig/release , hit enter
wait for results
then ipconfig/renew hit enter wait for results
you should have aquired a private ip address like 192.168.1.1, or 10.10.10.10 or 172.0.0.0 dependimg on your router...you should not see the out of box windows ip address of 169.xx.xx.xx
at this point you will want the manual for the router, probably read it through first. you can download the manual from the manufacturers web site of the router.
basically what you need to do is find the gateway address in the above command prompt
click ie, no matter what comes up , over type w/ the gateway address hit enter
this will bring you to the log in for the routers embedded web page, hopefully the default password and user name has not been changed, if no one knows what it is and the one in the manual does not work you will need to reset the router, which you will lose all your settings and the router will be as new, go into the router set up your broadband ( may need help from your BB privder) and set up your wireless. Yo will need encryption for the wireless, first get the wireless working then go back and set the encryption, WPA, do not use WEP. Also there may be an install cd for the router...i try to stay away from those, the way above you will learn more about the router and will be able to trouble shoot. It might also be a good idea to turn everything off onece cabled correctly, b/c sometimes cable modes will cache a downstream ip address. turn the modem on wait a few, then the router then the pc. good luck
