Full Version: [Resolved] Window's Me Problem
Suggest A Fix PC Support Forums > Operating Systems > Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000
sls616
Hello, I was just introduced to your forum by a very nice member who gave me the link to get here. She told me that you could help me out with my Window's ME problems. To begin with, I know how stupid I was not to run an antivirus and anti-spyware program at all times!! My problems started just before Christmas and I have tried everything to fix my computer with no luck!! I think I may have picked up the Hallmark email virus that we were all warned about. My kids send me emails like that all the time and I think that might have something to do with my problems. I have tried downloading antivirus and anti-spyware software, but something is stopping most of them from working for me. They will sometimes download all right but then end up freezing up my PC and I have to re-boot, then they won't work at all after that. I have been getting Iexplore errors and also a Internet Explorer error message saying I have a Flash 9X error. I was able to download a free antivirus scanner, (Clam Win) but it takes forever to scan my whole sytem. So far it has picked up what it called Linux. Lion Worm (VMMHIBER.W9X) is what it called it. I had the file quarentined and then shut off my system restore, rebooted then turned it back on to get rid of the copies in my system restore. I am unable to play any videos without freezing up and also some websites freeze up every time I try to go to them. I am not very computer savvy, so I'm only able to do so much investigating on my own. Any help would really be appreciated. Thank-you!!

Welcome to SAF, sls616.

Hopefully, you'll be able to download RSIT. Save it to the desktop and run it there. It will generate a text file showing what's running on your system. Copy/paste the contents of the log in your reply and we'll take it from there.

Welcome to SAF, sls616.

Hopefully, you'll be able to download RSIT. Save it to the desktop and run it there. It will generate a text file showing what's running on your system. Copy/paste the contents of the log in your reply and we'll take it from there.

Hi, I tried to download and use the RSIT and my system wouldn't let it open after I downloaded it. I went to my sytem information and I found this under running tasks, I hope this helps. Thanks for your help!!
http://s96.photobucket.com/albums/l171/Sha...rent=blah-2.jpg I had to have my daughter help me with this, she said you can get the info by clicking this link or copying and pasting it into your browser.
HKEd
I guess RSIT doesn't work with Windows ME.

Please read this tutorial on using HijackThis to generate a log, then install the program and run it. Post the log in your reply.

When's the last time the inside of the computer was thoroughly cleaned and all the fans checked? This type of problem is not uncommon with overheating.
sls616
It's probably been at least a year since the inside has been checked. Thank-you for the help. I'm willing to try about anything to get this fixed.

Run HijackThis and click on 'Do a system scan only'. Put checks in the boxes next to these lines:

Click on 'Fix checked' and close HijackThis.

I would like to see what's running on your computer in a little more detail. Download SilentRunners.VBS to your desktop and run it there. If your virus scanner alerts you to the dangers of running a VBS file, ignore it. This file is safe. Wait for the prompt that the scan has finished, otherwise the log will be incomplete. POst the log in your reply.
sls616
Hi, I just tried to run the Hijack software to fix the files you told me to and now something is blocking the Hijack program from running!!! It starts up then the program freezes before it can finish. Here is the other log you asked for.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm ever going to be able to fix this, every time I try a new program it installs then freezes!!

There's nothing malicious showing in the HijackThis log. The fix I posted is more of a cleanup than anything else.

The SR log is incomplete. I asked you to wait for the prompt that the scan was complete bfore opening the log. Please run it again and post the full log.

I think Jim may be right about overheating. Check the air vents to see if there's any buildup of gunge and clean what you can. Can you open the case to see how the inside looks and if the fans are working?
sls616
Sorry, I thought I had posted the complete report.

There's no sign of malware showing. You should go to Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks and delete these two tasks:

"ErrorRepairTool Scheduled Scan"
"McAfee.com Scan for Viruses"

Install CCleaner and use it to delete all junk files (temp and temp internet files mainly). Run Scandisk and Defrag afterwards and see if there is any improvement.
