Ok, am on a game called pocket tanks which has LAN gaming.

My friend and I decided we would try playing each other from home by using our lab's VPN connection.

We're both connected to the VPN and the pocket tanks lobby shows the IP address that the VPN issued us.

We can also ping each other so the VPN is definitely allowing our computers to talk to each other.

Any ideas?

What kind of VPN is this? Perhaps there are firewall rules banghead.gif in place that block the ports you're trying to use for the game, which is most likely the case. You may also wish to check your own firewall/internet security software... but...

A solution that may work better in your situation is Hamachi thumb up.gif which is a software VPN application. Once you both install it you'll be able to play LAN games over the internet.

TIP: You may need to increase Himachi's priority in your network card's list - which means the PC will look for Himachi first for network connections, instead of our NIC card. See: Google: Changing network card proirity

Good luck and have fun! compute.gif

Andy,

Very likely the VPN software is blocking the game's require ports as Paul suggested.

Be careful and check before you install VPN software. If you are connecting to a company LAN with the VPN, check with the company's IT department before you change/install software.
I have not checked into Hamachi - but as an IT guy I would be concerned if my staff would install anything VPN related onto their (home or work) computers if they also have VPN access to my network.

Find out which ports the game needs and see if those ports can be opened up on your existing VPN.

Good luck!

Thanks guys,
The VPN is part of the lab network here at Dundee university's school of computing.
I'll speak with the lab technician about ports.

Will be back to say how I get on.
