Alright, I have a very annoying problem here. While I am gaming (any game I play) my computer will randomly reboot and I will be staring at the POST screen. It also happens after I esc out of a full screen video. It is driving me nuts! I don't think it is a heat issue because today when I booted up I went to youtube, full screened a video and just hit esc to see what would happen. After the second time I pressed it, it rebooted.

The computer is newly built. Everything in it is new aside from my old DVD drive. I built it myself and it was my first time building a PC. I have read that this is something that happens with newly built PCs and since I am not a tech, I need help pinpointing the problem.

Here are my CPU-Z results:

howdy hank
i'd like to see cpu, gpu, hd temps

get hwmonitor from the cpuz web site

gpuz from

http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1304/...PU-Z_v0.3.1.htm

and let us know.

also run ms memtest for a quick memory check.

Alright here is my HWMonitor results:

I also attached the HWMonitor log which I am sure you would want to look at.

Also, where it shows TMPIN2 on the HWMonitor results it reads something like 87C. I don't think that is right because when I ran SpeedFan it registers Temp 3 at the same temperature. I did some research and it turns out that it happens to a lot of people. It seems to be registering the temperature on something that isn't there.

Anyway thanks for your reply, and I will run the memtest overnight. Thanks again.
Surfer
all temps are good. you have catylist 8.12 drivers?

Yeah, I downloaded them a few weeks ago.

Also, I ran the Memtest for about 9 cycles. No errors were encountered. Should I let it longer over night? And if so, should I use the advanced test?

Any ideas what would cause it to reboot after exiting a full screen video? That seems weird to me. Thanks
Surfer
no idea hank what would cause it unless it's heat.

ms memtest doesn't need to run too long. if you want to run a longer one use memtest86+

http://www.memtest.org/

set it so it'll show a bsod and the stop error rather than reboot.

Yeah, that's another thing. I have unchecked that box in hopes of producing a bsod with an error message but it never happens. It just reboots and posts. beatsme.gif

Ok, it just happened again. I was playing Warhammer Online and it just rebooted. I checked the ACEE Log in the Event Viewer and there are 3 entries that were made around the time of the reboot. Here they are:

Any ideas? Thanks.

not a clue. i have exactly the same events and no reboots. is your 4850 set for vpu recovery in catalyst control center. maybe it'll stop the reboots. are you in vista or xp?

Hmmm. I don't know where to find this VPU recovery option, can you tell me where it would be? Also, I do not have the drivers for my Samsung monitor downloaded since they do not offer a 64-bit version and I read installing the 32-bit version could damage my system. Do you think that could be a problem?

I am running Vista64 Home Premium.

Samsung SyncMaster226BW.

By the way, I really appreciate all the help. Thank you.

EDIT: Just downloaded the drivers from Samsung's site and my computer didn't explode.
Surfer
vpu recovery should be in display properties, advanced, catalyst control center tab. select advanced mode. if not there then the full driver package needs installed and needs .net 2.0 but i think vista has .net as default install.

that's an excellent monitor and doubt it's any part of the problem samsung drivers or not but i'd be delighted to be wrong..

I have checked my Windows Update history and there was an update for .NET Framework 3.0 and also a security update for .Net Framework, Version 2.0. I assume this means I have it, but I can't find a VPU recover option for my 4850. Maybe it doesn't come with one?

I do have some updates on my list that were failed. I will try to get them installed. How would I go about installing failed updates? I don't see an option to re-download the update.

I was also reading that I can try disabling Hardware Acceleration, one notch at a time until the problem is solved. But the problem is when I go to adjust the slider it says "Your current display driver does not allow changes to be made to the hardware acceleration settings. Any suggestions? Could it possibly be controlled somewhere else?
Surfer
just a guess but acceleration may be tied to catalyst CC.
Surfer
there's also the possibility your drivers aren't installed right.

So should I uninstall the drivers and then re-install them to see if that helps?

I just checked my Display Adapter in the device manager and it my driver version doesn't match the newest release, but I know I downloaded it. I will redownload and let you know how that goes.

Ok, I have ATI folders in 4 separate locations.

C:\ATI\SUPPORT\8-11_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_70230------8-12_vista64_dd_72276---------8-12_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_72276 (3 folders) It wants to install in that directory automatically.
C:\Program Files\ATI------------CIM Folder
C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies---------cccutil64 text file

C:\Program Files(x86)ATI Technologies--------ATI.ACE and Hydravision file folders

What to do, what to do tongue.gif Should I just let it install where it wants to?

Alright, well I uninstalled my old drivers and re-installed the latest version. I went to test it out with the grueling youtube-fullscreen-esc-out stress test and as usual it rebooted with the second try.

Still no choice for hardware acceleration either. Also no vpu recovery option.

Maybe this is a 64-bit problem? I never had this trouble with Vista 32-bit or XP.

Thanks.
Surfer
hmmmm. i had a similar problem with utube and found a problem with the software firewall i was using. disable any firewall y'all may have. maybe disable data execution prevention in bios and in boot.ini will help. if that video card is under warranty maybe it needs rma'd. i'm stumped. the 4850 by all accounts is excellent and rarely causes problems especially since the 8.12 drivers.
Surfer
i don't know if vista has dxdiag but try start, run type dxdiag. maybe we're looking in the wrong place and the problem is sound drivers. audio has been a problem in vista and better drivers have been published. creative has been a particularly bad problem with vista.

I have disabled the sound drivers in the device manager, and that did not work. Also in Dxdiag there is no report of conflict with the sound drivers.

I am going to go into BIOS and disable onboard sound and see if that helps. I think it is the same thing as disabling the drivers from device manager, but I could be wrong (and probably am.)

I also disabled DEP and that didn't work.
HankGibson
Disabling onbard sound didn't help.

Maybe this jas something to do with an update not being installed? I have looked at my windows update list and under failed there are quite a few labeled as Important.

Or maybe it is the card. I will do some research.

I was looking at my Mainboard on the Gigabyte website Rev 1.1 Anything there I should download? Drivers and such?

My Mainboard
Surfer
these may be more recent than the ones y'all have

audio drivers
Realtek Function driver for Realtek Azalia audio chip (Including Microsoft UAA/HDMI Driver in English edition)

chipset drivers.
AMD Chipset Driver (include chipset\sata raid\vga driver)
O.S. : Windows Vista x86 (32-bit),Windows Vista x64 (64-bit
Surfer
in this case maybe the latest bios as well
HankGibson
I downloaded the audio drivers and the chipset drivers. I believe the chipset drivers were packaged already with the catalyst suite though actually. So I guess I will test it and see how it goes.

Oh what a wonderful life! So 2 days ago I wanted to check if my problem was still there. Went to youtube, clicked a video, full screen......ESC.

My computer escaped alright. Right out of the world of the living. A faint smell was in the air. I think it was the smell of ######.

My motherboard fried as well as my GPU. I don't know which caused it, but it happened alright. I recived a new motherboard today, A Foxconn. I am up and running right now, and I am tempted to see if it would happen again...

Maybe I won't.

I RMA'd the GPU and I am hoping they will replace it. Still under warranty. Thanks for your help though Surfer. I appreciate it. wub.gif

too bad about the mobo and gpu but it's probably solved the problem. talk about dieing my keyboard batteries died right after the and.

Yeah it doesn't seem like the winter is a good time for electronics. The reason I originally had to build a new PC was because it died on me right when winter started. Then after a month of no computer I finally got all the parts and had it running. That same night my 360 died haha.

Now my mobo, gpu, and your keyboard. What a horrible time!

I do hope the problem has been fixed. One of the two was faulty I think. Maybe both. I will just have to see when I get my new gpu. Until then, on-board will have to do!
Surfer
ha! maybe you're being told to steer clear of utube? nah couldn't be....or could it?
HankGibson
Honestly, I am afraid to go back on youtube now haha. I am going to try to avoid any instance where I have to esc out of a full screen video too tongue.gif
