I recently purchased an EMachine from a liquidation sale. beatsme.gif It was being used in a call center. I am not able to find the modem. From what I understand (and that's not saying much) a modem is simply the electronic device used to connect one to the internet. Sooo does that mean I can simply download something and get this thing working or do I need to purchase a modem? If the later, where can I find an inexpensive one? Ok, yes, this is not my area of expertise! confused.gif

It could very well have an integrated modem built in. Does it have a plug in on the back that a telephone plug fits into? Even if it does, you will still have to start an account with a Service Provider in order to connect. Some dial-up services are as low as $9.95 per month.

Yes, it has a plug in. I do have an account with a service provider- when I called them they said I need to find out the modem driver online and they couldn't help me any further (understandable). compute.gif EMachine's website really sucks..... and I'm not very computer savy. Any thoughts?

As it's Win98, it won't detect the modem automatically. You'll need to install the correct drivers for your modem. Can you post back what modem and model you have, then perhaps we might be able to point you in the right direction.

Some newer modems may not be Win98 compatible, in which case you'll have to go out and get a new one anyway.

As a general rule, you should start the installation of the drivers off first and plug in the modem when it tells you to, otherwise it can get a bit confused and not install properly.

But you'll need access to another computer so you can download the drivers, maybe put them onto a USB flash drive that you can use with Win98, copy them across and then install from there.
