So basically I want to upgrade my windows 2000 professional to vista but my computer has such poor specs

Dell Dimension 4100
Hard drive:20gb
Ram:100mb
4X AGP graphics 16mb
Intel pentium III

Thats all I really know bout it like I know I have to upgrade the hardware but Im just not really sure how to go about doing it.
Please help if you have the time.

Thank you in advance

Hi Ravuya, welcome to SAF

I definitely recommend you to stick with windows 2000 professional. Your current hardware does not match Vista requirements. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-v...quirements.aspx

Your motherboard probably wouldn't support the heavy upgrade needed. sad.gif

Ya but I just need something better for my desktop do you think their is any chance of running xp or maybe some kind of linux
Would my motherboard possibly be able to hold 256mb ram do you know.
Ironbender
256 is barely enough to run Windows XP... Dell Dimension 4100 have 2 memory slots for two 256MB SDRAM, 168-pin DIMM PC133 memory modules. With 512 mB Ram, XP will run, limited to the processor speed. btw, what PIII do you have installed ? (a P4 or Athlon will perform better)

You'll also probably need to upgrade your AGP videocard...

Linux will run on a system like yours, I guess.

To be honest I have no idea how to find out what pIII I have installed all it says is Intel inside pentium III and On one of my other desktop I have windows xp home edition running on 256 mb smoothly.

pc wizard will ferret out your specs.

Windows 2000 was the building block for XP, and XP will run on that machine.

However, as Ironbender stated, 256 MB of RAM is the minimum you should run XP with. A memory upgrade/addition would make it run much better.

Your graphics (card) will be adequate.

I run XP Home (retail CD) on an 866 Mhz HP Vectra VL400 MT, with 384 MB of ram, and an ATI All-In-Wonder AGP graphics card (32 MB of video memory) and it runs just fine. The machine came from "the factory" with Win 2000 Pro pre-installed. I booted it to see the specs, then satisfied, I installed my ATI graphics card, then "stomped on it", (blew away everything,) and loaded XP Home.

my pc is running 384 MB has a 900mz processor and a 30 GB hard drive. It originally had 128 MB of Ram and when I installed Xp it ran ridiculously slow. Once I upgraded to 384 MB it runs fast enough for me. You should be able to run Xp on yours after you upgrade the memory which is pretty easy to do. If you really want Vista your best bet would to be a used PC that can support vista. I think Microsoft said they will support Xp until 2010 or 2011 so you should have a few years.
