so i know about the anitvirus xp thing thats going around (it is screwing with my parents computer) but anyway so earlier today a pop up came up that said antivirus xp install,l I closed it knowing what it was something else came up that that said agree and install to which I opened task manager and closed it seeing as the only option to was agree and install. Later today I closed my firefox browser only to see my desktop look like this



and i can't change it i get this when i go to desktop properties



I actually got the blue screen of death a second ago (i didn't read it... ha) but it went away when I hit enter do idk whats up with that.

Welcome to SAF, cobyrockchick. We'll start with MBAM:

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to the desktop.

* Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
* When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
* When installation has finished, make sure you leave both these checked:
o Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
* Then click Finish.
* MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
* On the Scanner tab:
o Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
o Then click on the Scan button.
* The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
* The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
* When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
* Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
* Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
* The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

NB - If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

For some reason MBAM keeps disappearing from my taskbar in the middle of the scan. I try to reopen it but it says that it is already running. it appears in taskmanager but i don't know how to open it up. It has done this twice; I restarted my computer between scans but it happened again. is there something else I can use or how do I fix this? So frustrating....

It may take MBAM some time to complete the scan. However, the interface should be visible or minimised on the taskbar. Can you try running the scan in safe mode - instructions here.

Install CCleaner.

Open the task manager and End Process on this file if you can see it:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\.ttD8.tmp

Run CCleaner and delete all temp and temp internet files.

Run HijackThis and click on 'Do a system scan only'. Put a check in the box next to this line:

Click on 'Fix checked' and close HijackThis.

Reboot.

Migrate to the HijackThis folder: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Open it and right-click on HijackThis.exe. Select Rename and change the file name to Hcheck.exe.

Post a fresh HijackThis log.

As the system was infected with a backdoor trojan, you should change all passwords immediately. If you have conducted any business over the internet such as credit card purchases or internet banking, sensitive information may be in the hands of others. You should contact any companies involved and let them know the situation.

just one last question: I haven't signed into anything important while my computer has been infected would you still recommend that I change all my passwords? I guess I just want to know the extent of how bad this messed with my computer.

You didn't rename HijackThis.exe as requested. I need to see a fresh log from the renamed file.

You need to update Java. The version you have is old and unsecure. Download it from here:

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Once installed, you can uninstall any older versions from Add/Remove Programs. You should also uninstall Viewpoint Manager (unless you use it).



To be on the safe side, yes.

I can second the reccomendation for using Malwarebytes' program. I had the exact problem as you, coby. Fixed now.

One thing-- when I downloaded Anti-malware I ran an update to get the latest signatures. I had to do this using a mirror (located in the Update tab) as the main site was blocked by this vicious little bug.
