Full Version: Background/wallpaper Hijacked
Suggest A Fix PC Support Forums > Security > Malicious Code: Viruses, Trojans, Spyware and Browser HiJacking
Homer
Hi: First time here. I have been reading about other similar problems w/WIN XP 'wallpaper' (background) being changed because of an unwanted infection. I am running Windows XP,SP3 Home Edition. The result of my 'infection' is that my Background has been changed to some awful, brightly colored rectangles. And when I go to into the Display window, I still have all my Tabs but in 'Desktop', the "Background" window is grayish and locked up. I cannot make any changes. It appears to be set on wallpaper whcih is from the internet ... it is titled "~tmp" (with the umlaf ~ at the top of the "t"). Further investigation shows it is an "html" thing. After I got alerted that I had been infected, I ran all my 'fixit' pgms - SpyBot, AdAware,
Windows Defender, AVG Free, and Glarysoft Reg Repair. Many items were found and (supposedly) fixed.

Also, after reading many posts, I D/L the "HiJackThis" pgm and I have included the latest log.

The one item that caught my attention is an "AniGIFv.exe" file which is marked as 04 and is in [Run Services] line. SpyBot brought it to my attention. (I think there should be an "AniGif" named file w/o the small "v")

Thanking you in advance for any assistance you might be able to give.

Hi again. I kept searching for a solution to my wallpaper problem and found this webpage ---

http://www.helpmerick.com/solution_compute..._background.htm

After reading the first page of the postings, I did the value change from "1" to "0" in the machine key. That allowed me to change my wallpaper.

Now, I still may have other issues as indicated in the 'HiJackThis" file. So if anyone sees something and wants to advise how to fix, I'll be happy to try.

TNX again,
Homer
HKEd
Welcome to SAF, Homer.

Yes, that AniGIFv.exe file is unspecified malware. Before using HijackThis, I'd like you to run MBAM:

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to the desktop.
    * Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    * When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    * When installation has finished, make sure you leave both these checked:
    o Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    o Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    * Then click Finish.
    * MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    * On the Scanner tab:
o Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
o Then click on the Scan button.
    * The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    * The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    * When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    * Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    * Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    * Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    * The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    * Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
NB - If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

From one Carbon-Based Life Form to another, HKEd, thank you for assisting. I followed your instructions.
I would like to mention this, however, while MBAM was scanning, my AVG Free (which I had running - perhaps mistakenly), indicated about 6 or 7 Threats were present when particular files were opened by MBAM. I selected "Heal" (which I hope = 'remove') each time I received that warning ... MBAM completed its' scan without any problems. Logs follow:

Hi Homer...is Spybot Search & Destroy still installed? Its TeaTimer shows in the program startup group, but i don't see it running.

Run HijackThis and click on 'Do a system scan only'. Put checks in the boxes next to these lines:

O16 - DPF: {10000000-1000-0000-1000-000000000000} -

O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: IPC Configuration Utility - IPC Configuration Utility - (no file)

O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: Windows Installer Class - {020487CC-FC04-4B1E-863F-D9801796230B} - (no file)

Click on 'Fix checked' and close HijackThis.

Uninstall Viewpoint Manager if you don't use it.

Install CCleaner and use it to delete all temp and temp internet files.

Disable and re-enable System Restore following the instructions for XP here.

Post a fresh HijackThis log for a final check and let me know how the computer is behaving.
Homer
Good day HKEd: Yes, SpyBot is still installed but I have disabled the 'Tea Timer' in the StartUp config. I read in other posts that the T Timer might interfere with some of these 'fix-up' pgms. Now that I have MBAM, perhaps I don't need SpyBot .... although it has saved me a couple of times with its' Threat Warnings. I'll take your recommendation as to whether or not to keep it. Maybe just keep SpyBot as an additional pgm to help chk for malware and not run Tea Timer. (It's all very confusing to me and Bill Gates keeps getting richer and richer as we poor end-users keep getting more frustrated and HIT with these Viruses and Spyware, etc.)
(enough soap-box stuff) --- I deleted the Viewpoint Mgr (don't even know what it is!) and followed your instructions. After checking a few web-sites, I have noticed an increase in the performance. So I guess I had a lot of useless crap on this computer! Here's the latest HiJack file:

All looks well, Homer. thumb up.gif

Yes, TeaTimer gets in the way of a cleanup, particularly as it blocks changes made in HijackThis.

Viewpoint Manager is not malicious. However, it is usually installed without users' knowledge or consent (bundled with the likes of AOL). I've never come across anyone who uses it, yet it's always running. Seems a bit pointless to me. confused.gif

With Ad-Aware and Spybot, you should be reasonably protected. The free version of MBAM doesn't have real-time protection, so it won't cause any conflicts. No harm in keeping it and running it from time to time. Up to you.

You're very welcome for the help.
Homer
Hi HKEd: OK on your last info. Along with web pages loading faster, the start-up of the computer is faster as well as the booting of pgms, i.e. Win Outlook Exp.
If you are ever in the Allentown,PA, USA area, please let me know. I owe you a lunch or dinner or both... hello.gif
