Full Version: Modem Will Not Connect After Router Was Plugged In
Suggest A Fix PC Support Forums > Internet > Internet Issues

The problem is my father decided that he wanted to hook up a router to his computer in order to connect another computer. Up until he did that his modem worked fine. He plugged in the router and about a hour or so later the modem went down. He did not program anything just plugged it in. When his modem went down the only lights that would come on is the power and ethernet. DSL and internet lights would not come on.
They called tech support through their internet provider and they sent them a new modem. Again the problem persisted. They unplugged the router and did not plug it back in. They reset the modem and still nothing. I was told to reset the ip and dns addresses and then check the dhcp server.... does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do? Perferrably a solution with steps on how to correct this? thanks

My parents have a speed touch thomson ST5165V6 modem
The router was a prendnet
And they run on Windows Vista

I get the same problem every now and then; my solutions are listed below but as a last resort, you may need to contact your ISP to check your DSL signal:
Solution 1:
Click on the local area connection icon in your system tray, go to the Support tab, and then click the Repair button.

Solution 2:
Go to Start, Run, type in cmd, and in the command prompt window type in:
a- ipconfig /flushdns
b- ipconfig /release
c- ipconfig /renew
You can also type in ipconfig /? for a list of all the ipconfig command modifiers.

Solution 3:
Go to C:\WINDOWS\Network Diagnostic, and double-click on xpnetdiag to run it. This can also be done when you have a webpage open, and you click on Tools, Diagnose Connection Problems, but it’s faster when you do it via C:\WINDOWS\Network Diagnostic. As you run xpnetdiag, it will create an xml file with the same name “xpnetdiag,” which you can open and read after the utility finished running.

Solution 4:
Try a system restore to an earlier date before this happened.

Solution 5:
Do a clean install of Windows.

Solution 6:
Get another DSL modem, which you already did.

I doubt that solutions 4 and 5 may work, but you can use them to eliminate all possible causes for your problem. I also think that this may be a DSL signal related issue, but you need to try all possible solutions before you contact your ISP and have them send someone to check your signal and how far you are from the Central Office (CO).
