i've checked download.com and Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 seems to have everything to recommend it except price.
Anyone know a good free partition program?

if you're looking to remove vista then this is what to use
Darik's Boot and Nuke 2.0then start xp install from cd. you'll have the opportunity to format during install. have sata drivers on floppy if needed for F6 install.

I've chosen Sun's VirtualBox and installed XP with it. It's as easy an installation you'll ever find, runs XP on a Vista machine flawlessly, and it's free.
I recommend it without qualification.
