Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me. Over the past few days, my computer has been slowing down and I've been getting a lot of pop-ups. Yes, you've done everything right.

Start by downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to the desktop.

* Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
* When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
* When installation has finished, make sure you leave both these checked:
o Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
* Then click Finish.
* MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
* On the Scanner tab:
o Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
o Then click on the Scan button.
* The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
* The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
* When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
* Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
* Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
* The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

NB - If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Next step is to check for any malware files that MBAM didn't detect.

Download Deckard's System Scanner to the desktop (the download link is in the centre, about 2/3rds of the way down the page). Run Dss.exe and post the log it generates.

Are you still getting the popups? What is their nature - what site are they from?

I'd like to take a closer look at what's running, so download SilentRunners.VBS to the desktop and run it there. Don't worry if your anti-virus program warns you against running a VBS file; just allow it. Wait for the prompt that the scan has finished, otherwise the log will be incomplete. Post the log here please.

You need to disable Spybot's TeaTimer as it prevents changes being made in Hijackthis. Follow the instructions here and reboot afterwards.

Run HijackThis and click on 'Do a system scan only'. Put a check in the box next to this line:

Click on 'Fix checked' and close HijackThis. Post a fresh HijackThis log.

Yes...you're doing great.

Can you check Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and see if there's a program called WinPCap installed. The file that Avast is flagging seems to belong to that program. It's not malicious, so Avast may be catching what's called a false-positive - i.e. a file that is not malicious containing code that appears malicious to Avast.

I have checked for the WinPCap program in the Add/Remove Programs, and it's not there. Strange? Any other suggestions?

There's no harm in getting rid of that file as it's either malicious or part of a program that isn't used.

Here's a new toy to play with:

Download The Avenger and unzip it to the desktop. Run Avenger.exe and copy/paste the contents of the Code box below to the section under 'Input script here':



Click on Execute and reboot when prompted.

Post the Avenger log which you'll find at C:\Avenger.txt.

There's not much more that we can do until Deckard's is available again. Your logs look clean, but Deckard's often finds files that otherwise go undetected.

I'd recommend an online scan at BitDefender. Save the report at the end of the scan and post it here.

OK, I have scanned with BitDefender twice, but i have been unable to save the report (when I click on 'show report' it gives me a blank page) - I can't figure it out... do you know what I'm doing wrong? Anyway, the BitDefender scan doesn't seem to be finding anything either. Also, this morning was the first time that I started up and didn't get the virust warning from Avast, so I'm feeling cautiously optimistic at this point. Thanks again for all of your help!

Can I ask another question? What should I have installed on my computer to keep it safe from here on out? I have Avast and Spybot (by the way, should I re-activate the TeaTimer?) - and I have Windows Defender. Can you recommend something else? I'm sure there must be other things that I should have, but I don't know what! Also, is Avast a good Anti-virus program?

Hi Steph...to save the scan report, follow the instructions here.

You can re-enable TeaTimer.

Avast is as good as any of the free virus scanners. But virus scanners tend to be ineffective against today's malware which uses code that scanners don't recognise as viral. Spybot is good, but no one program, or even a combination of programs, can offer real defence. Hold on to MBAM and scan with it regularly (check for updates each time). Also install SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard from Javacool.

You might also consider installing a firewall from Comodo or ZoneAlarm.
