a little back ground first here are my system specs

Windows Vista Ultimate 6.00.6001 Service Pack 1
DirectX 10.0
IE 7.0.6001.18000 Build 7601

Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40Ghz
MB Msi P35 Platinum

4GB Ram
Realtek Sound
ATI Radeon HD3800

For some reason My Plextor PX-800a CD/DVDr drive will not burn discs. I am using Nero 7 and have tried burning from MP with no luck either. and the latest thing to go haywire is my 8gb flash thum drive Which windows is now telling me I need to format before I can use it? funny thing is I try the format and windows says it cannot format the removeable drive.

But back to the CD/dvd drive. I have stuck my vista Dvd in and then clicked on My computer and windows does not even acknoledge theres a DvD in the drive. when I double click it it tells me to insert media! I was thinking well maybe the drive is going out. tried cleaning the lense using a cleaning CD no luck so I went to best buy and purchased a new HP DVDrom drive 1070d ATA and have the same problem?

is ther a way to fix this or am I looking at a wipe and reinstall of the OS?

It doesn’t look like a hardware issue as you already tried another drive; so you can try the following:
1- Check Device Manager to see if there are any issues with your CD/DVD drive.
2- Run System Restore to a date before that happened.
3- Do a repair install of Windows.
If you decide on going with options 2 and 3, then you need to back up all your important data to be on the safe side.

i'd say to boot into safe mode, open device manager and uninstall all cd/dvd drives listed. reboot in normal mode.

no everything is good in device manager
2- Run System Restore to a date before that happened.
No luck same outcome no matter what RP I choose
3- Do a repair install of Windows.
Repair install only available in xp. however there is a repair option in vista. incerting the cd and booting from it. However the repair found no problems with the windows install folder
If you decide on going with options 2 and 3, then you need to back up all your important data to be on the safe side.

This seems to have solved the issue for burning an audio cd. Will attempt a data CD and see what happens

Now to research the flash drive issue!

there's lots of problems with a mix of sata and ide drives, especially cd/dvd drives in win xp with the ich9 sata controller. see if there's a motherboard bios update. i did my gigabyte and have no problems since.
