Greetings all,

I've been using FREE AVG 8.0.138 and I've been happy with it for the last couple of years upgrading as the new FREE versions come out.

Tonight I went to shut down and saw that AVG was showing a red warning so I tried to update and I keep getting this message.....

You are missing A .bin file.

I don't what this is or where to get the missing file.

I cannot update.

Is AVG no longer FREE? Do I need to purchase it now if I want to use AVG? It's something like $54 which I'm not going to pay when there are freebies out there.

Can anyone recommend another free Antivirus program that I can download from the internet.

If so could you please post a link.

I'm presuming IF there is another suggested program other than AVG (which appears to be no longer free) I would have to uninstall AVG before installing new antivirus program?

My computer is apparently unprotected now so I need to move quickly on this. I hate not having some sort of protection.

Thank you for any help.

Hi Outback Annie,

Suggest you read this link which explains everything by a very respected Administrator.

In answer to your question re a good Antivirus program, I run Avast on my computers without a moments trouble. Take a look here and see what you think.

Keep us posted . hello.gif

Thanks tallin,

It seems to be OK today. It's running it's normal scan and everything is OK so far. I read the thread you left and it appears to be a problem with the AVG site so I didn't mess with it.

I'm going to look into Avast. Will let you know what I decide to do after it's finished its scan and I've explored Avast. I may change to Avast.

Thank you for posting the link.

Hi Ann...I quite liked Avast when I tried it. One warning though - if your computer is in the bedroom (as mine is) and the sound volume is turned up, Avast has a voice confirmation for installed updates that could wake the dead. Scared the heck out of me one night as I was sleeping. hairup.gif

There is a way of turning it off if it's a problem.

Thanks HKEd,

At this point I haven't had any more problems with AVG so I'll leave it as is for now.

I always shut my computer down at night then reboot in the morning so I guess that confirmation would scare the heck out of whoever first boots it in the morning.

Will keep it in mind though if AVG does away with their freebie though.

ClamWin is another to keep in mind. I've not been displeased with it on the few Windoze boxen I keep.
