I have been trying to update multiple programs but get the error 1500 and I don't have any program already updating. I don't know how long it has been like this. I did some of the suggestions that Mikey-bud had been given but nothing has helped so far. I hope you can help me with this as well.

I don't see anything malicious in the log. We can look a little deeper using another program if malware turns out to be a suspect, but the error you describe is most likely from having multiple instances of Msiexec.exe running.

Before updating, open the task manager and click on the Processes tab. Highlight all instances of Msiexec.exe and click on End Process for each. See if you can update normally afterwards. Let us know how it goes.

I only had 2 of those, when I did the end process they popped back up. I am still unable to update programs.

We'll take a closer look to see if anything malicious is lurking:

Download Deckard's System Scanner to the desktop (the download link is in the centre, about 2/3rds of the way down the page). Run Dss.exe and post the log it generates.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to the desktop.

* Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
* When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
* When installation has finished, make sure you leave both these checked:
o Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
* Then click Finish.
* MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
* On the Scanner tab:
o Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
o Then click on the Scan button.
* The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
* The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
* When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
* Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
* Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
* The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

NB - If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Click Start, then Run and type services.msc in the Run box.

Scroll down to 'Windows Installer' and double-click on it. In the box next to 'Startup type:' does it dhow Manual or Automatic?

It says manual.

I even tried to do the simplest of things like installing a printer and it wouldn't let me do that. I tried to uninstall the printer software and got the same message that something was running and couldn't complete task.

As this is not a malware issue, can you please start a new thread in the Windows XP forum where you'll get more input.

The problem is basically that you have two instances of Msiexec.exe running and this won't allow to install programs. I can't see what is causing this.

hmm ok. I will just take it to a computer guy I know and see if he can find the problem. I am glad to know it isn't a virus or something. Thank you so much for your help and time.
