Good Evening,

Because my daughter is at college and subject to all sorts of nasties (her computer, not her), I elected to use/purchase trend micro as opposed to a free program. Downloading it required I remove Spybot. Why is this?

Thanks as always,

Chris

Spybot is a good program, there is nothing disreputable about it. What it does by default is load a protector scanner that loads on bootup and continually runs in the background; it does not allow programs to make certain changes in your operating system that virii many times will do. Because of this it can interfere in the installation and initial scan of your anitvirus program. After PCcillin is installed and running, you can reinstall Spybot if you wish. Personally, I have not found it to be very effective.

[EDIT]: What I mean is that I have found "Teatimer", the scanner utility loaded by Spybot, not to be very effective. Spybot is an excellent utility to run regularly to remove adware and viruses. BTW - I just had a daughter graduate college so I have "been where you are". Warn her off on using any peer to peer file sharing programs such as Limewire, Emule, etc. Kids love to download music off these things, and end up with viruses, trojans, etc. In addition, the RIAA and movie industry institute hundreds of lawsuits for large amounts of money yearly. They have scanners that capture IP addresses while downloading or uploading files on these P-P networks and this is copywrited stuff. Whether we personally feel this is fair or not is irrelevant - the law is on their side.

Thank you Ranchhand,

Though there are many excellent free anti-virus and firewalls, I elected to go with the Trend-Micro pay. Despite my threats, badgering, etc. she still uses limewire. After discussing at length with the FSU techies about what they get hit with each day this seems to be the choice. I also follow John's advice in the pinned test topic. This is her sophmore year and I used PC last year but do not remeber removing spybot.

BTW, should I now turn off the windows AV/FW and also I think Comcast may have one. Or is more better?

Thanks again,

Chris

Trend Micro Internet Security is all I run, and have found it to be exceptional protection. But all the protection in the world may still let a nasty through. It takes a few days for a totally new strain of virus to have a 'definition' written for it and then get uploaded to the program.

First, Windows XP does not have an antivirus, but it does have a firewall. PCcillin is not a firewall and will not block open ports (at lease that was the case last year, I am not sure about this year because I dropped them); that means that a hacker can scan your ports, see one open, and drop a trojan or rootkit on your computer. You definitely do not want that. There are excellent free firewalls out there, notably Zone Alarm. You can use XP's firewall, but it is rudimentary at best (like all utilities that come with Windows products) and will not block outgoing packets, only incoming. You really want something that will flag an unknown, unauthorized outbound packet.

If you are running through a router (not a modem, I mean a router) it will have a built-in firewall so you are safe. The general rule is that you do NOT want multiple antiviruses and firewalls that are installed on your computer running together; they can conflict and cause problems. The only exception to this that I have found is that you can have a firewall installed on your computer, and also one on the router. For some reason they don't seem to have any conflicts, at lease I have never had any problems. I am running Comodo Pro (free) and a D-Link 802.11G router on Comcast cable with no problems.

As mentioned above, the Trend package is all I run. Here's the results from Steve Gibson's "Shields Up!" site.....

Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.

Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

OPEN! FTP servers have many known security vulnerabilities and the payoff from exploiting an insecure FTP server can be significant. This system's open FTP port is inviting intruders to examine your system more closely.

Etc...

All ports except for 21 are invisible to the internet (Stealth). 21 is open because I have an FTP server, however it's security is within the server via secure logins. Also be aware that I am using a router, which also acts as a 'hardware' firewall.

This just shows that you can have great computer security without running a dozen conflicting programs. smile.gif

this is with file and printer sharing, no firewall, connected to router with firewall enabled.

I don't use a firewall (the router I use should be enough). All ports are Stealth apart from two ports reported as Closed (IDENT and HTTPS).
