I use both internet explorer and firefox on this machine. recently I installed the latest version of firefox and accidently made it the default browser. now if that was the cause or not I dont know but internet explorer is not on my desktop anymore.

I went to control panel>internet options>select internet explorer as default browser but still no icon on desktop and I cant find the exe. file in C:/ program files> internet explorer to send to desktop

I was hoping someone might be able to help me out here

Thanks
jimholly
You should find additional copies of the IEXPLORE.EXE file in:

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\iexplore.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\iexplore.exe

If that doesn't work, try a repair install of IE. If IE appears in Add/Remove, click to remove. This should bring up an option to repair.

You could also grab a full copy of IE6.0 SP1 HERE. Update to IE7 through the updater if needed.

Thanks, Hey is the 6 sp1 better than the 7 or does it not matter?
jimholly
It's a personal preference thing. I prefer 6. About 5 days of 7 drove me nuts! I use the Crazy Browser add-on anyway, which gives it most of the features of 7, but without all the crashing.

It appears in add and remove but there is no file size or options anymore??? so how do I repair? or delete

At this point, I'd download the full IE install and run that. If this doesn't get you going, then an over-the-top repair reinstall of Windows may be necessary. You might try, before doing this, installing Crazy Browser. It uses mostly IE .dll files which should still be present, and may run OK.

Thanks I did find the exe. file in i386 and made a short cut on the desktop installed crazy browser and everything is working properly...

Still concerned about not being able to repair or delete internet explorer through add and remove programs!
what if I need to delete it?

but like I mentioned it works fine... Thanks again, Jeff

Don't worry about deleting IE - the IExplore.exe (only 91KB) file is what kicks it off, but there's loads of other .dll files that make it work, and most of those are used with other programs, so they won't delete.

BTW- you can still remove IE in Add/Remove by clicking on 'Add/Remove Windows components' in the left pane. Uncheck Internet Explorer in there. But, if you like Crazy Browser, remember it uses most of the IE .dll files, too. Uninstalling IE will probably kill Crazy Browser.
