Okay, I know how to add memory, done it many times. My gateway MT3705 can hold a whopping 2GB of ram. It currently has 2-512 GB DDR2 4200 memory modules. Works fine other than blue screen from time to time. Not a problem I can live with it. I just bought a matched pair of 1GB DDR2 5300 modules. When I install them then Windows won't start. Bios says yeah the modules are there. Ran the basic memory test and it passes. But it will not pass on the more thorough memory test. I tried several times going between memory modules. Boots fine on the orginal memory but will not boot on the new memory. Have tried several things to have windows fix its own problem....LOL what a joke. Is it possible that one of the modules is just faulty and causing the crash. I have run into bad memory before and it acts just like then. Oh when I do get a glimpse of the blue screen before it reboots it says: ...something caused memory dump? Any help would be appreciated. Memory still under warranty and will send it back but it could be something in the hardware? Help!!! banghead.gif pull hair.gif

yes, the possibility of a bad memory module is real. tried each module seperately?

Put each module in with a stick of the 512 MB ram and it seems to like it. Boots just fine. I will try again putting both sticks in. wacko.gif
I think I have narrowed it down to one module. computer froze at 21% on memory test. Other module passed memory test. I guess I could run 1.5 GB. Will see if Newegg will replace bad module. Thanks.

it'll probably run with 1 4200 and 1 5300 because it runs the 5300 as 4200 in flex mode. but it's probably not able to run 2 5300 because it runs 2 same speed modules in dual channel mode and the bios and or chipset isn't able to run 5300 in dual channel mode. get 4200 and it'll probably run ok or maybe there's a bios update that'll upgrade to 5300
