Full Version: Spysweeper Potential Rootkit-masked File?
Suggest A Fix PC Support Forums > Security > Malicious Code: Viruses, Trojans, Spyware and Browser HiJacking
WhiteMetalRabbit
Hello, I noticed there was a topic about Spy Sweeper and false positives about a year ago. I'm checking to make sure I'm taking the necessary precautions. My OS is Vista Home Premium.

This morning there was a notice along with the usual cookies

Found System Monitor: Potentially Rootkit-Masked Files.

I hit Quarantine button figuring it would apply to everything.... but then noticed it said Ignore next to Rootkit. Or so I thought, it just caught my eye after I hit the button. However when I went into the options area there it was with Always Ask next to it.In any event, since this is the first time such a warning has ever appeared and Always Ask is the default setting I figured if it popped up again the Ignore would have been only for the first detection?

It doesn't appear in the Quarantined items list so I don't know if I removed it or if there was actually anything to remove other than a potential detected risk? The language is confusing to me. sad.gif

I'm not clear on that so please let me know if I inadvertently did something wrong here? If so, how can I correct it? If I understand the Help section correctly, if it reappears, Spy Sweeper will detect it with the Always Ask option.

The unique code is H9GUFFP6. There is no file path mentioned in the system log.

I then did a another custom scan. No detection this time.

The Trend Micro AV 2007 sweep which has an anti-rootkit detection function shows nothing amiss.

F-Secure Blacklight scan is clean.

To your knowledge is H9GUFFP6 still considered a false positive with Spy Sweeper?

UPDATE: I'd emailed Webroot. They answered and said before they proceeded, did I have the latest updates? Yeppers, before I ran the first scan, I updated. Just for the heck of it, before I ran the second scan, I hit update and got even more new definitions. Perhaps the problem was in the first definitions and was eliminated in the second one? I smell false positive especially after the scans by the other providers and the info that H9UFFP6 is a false positive from the recent past.

But I prefer security to daring so.....

Here's the HJT report"

A dinosaur to the rescue of a rabbit. Thank you Dino. flower.gif

I had read that thread you link but wasn't sure if "once a false positive with that Unique Code, always a false positive" with such which is why I took the precaution of submitting my HJT log for scrutiny.

As I mentioned, no subsequent scans by SpySweeper or TrendMicro have sent up any more alerts.

Paws crossed.

And the one that mother gave me, Surfer, didn't do much at all. But mama tried...

Webroot emailed me:

Your system is free of spyware. The files detected by the RootKit Detection are legitimate and pose no security threat to your system. Spy Sweeper's "potentially rootkit-masked files" detection is not definition based, it is essentially looking for discrepancies between what Windows sees and what is actually on disk. It will from time to time detect harmless files. Click 'Options' > 'Always Apply' > hightlight the rootkit detection and click 'Always Ignore.' Thanks!

Well, I'd already done my due diligence and had my answer, but 'twas nice of them to write.

Happy w/e to all.
