Full Version: Usb Stops Working, Xp Shutdown Hangups, Cpu Processor Overloads . . .

First, here's what I'm running:

Toshiba Satellite M45
Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Sevice Pack 3
1.6 GHz Intel Pentium
504 MB RAM
C: 93.1 GB with 23.8GB Free

Help, not sure which problems started first, computer hangups, cpu overloads or USB port malfunctions, but one is probably affecting the others.

1- As long as I am using the mouse it seems to work fine for the first 10 - 15 minutes but eventually the USB port(s) shut down.

If I don't touch the mouse at all then the ports usually shut down withing a minute. Sometimes I can move the mouse to a different port but the same thing happens again. Other times all the ports shut down simultaneously. I have tried different mice with same results.

If the ports are no longer working and I go to shutdown the computer then it hangsup with the "Windows is shutting down" on the screen. Have to do a hard shutdown and restart at that point.

If I shut down or restart the computer while the USB port is still active (mouse functioning), then it shuts down, or restarts normally.

2 - Have been having issues with CPU processors running at 99-100%. Sometimes it's svchost.exe, sometimes it's iexplore.exe, sometimes avp.exe. Often it results in complete freeze up of machine, other times it corrects itself. It's sporadic and spurious and spiteful, and I just want to spank the spit out of it.

CPU processor spikes jump from svchost.exe to AVP.exe, to iexplore.exe, never seems to be any rhyme or reason. sometimes only the SYSTEM line (not the system idle) is showing 99% and nothing else.

Here's what I've done so far.

I've used msconfig to start computer with as few processes as possible (Microsoft System processes only), so now it's booting up with 22 - 25 processes.

I've uninstalled one AV software and installed a different one, although I don't know that this has had much effect.

I uninstalled all USB drivers then rebooted. I thought this had fixed all my problems for a little while as the USB ports were working again for extended periods regardless of mouse activity and it seemed as if the CPU was running smoother with fewer spikes.

Then after about an hour of idle time I went to do some work and la de da.... nothing again.

I've read and googled tons of ideas and am now posting this to you, so please . . . . .

HELP

thanks in advance

ps. although it may sound as if I understand alot about this stuff, I don't really, so as little technical jargon as possible please.

As the last time I uninstalled all the usb port drivers it seemed to have a beneficial effect, I've done so again, and now all seems to be well with the world.

However I am posting this "Hijack this" log (done while all seems to be working well) and then I am not going to touch my computer for one hour, then see if all is still right with the world.

I'll check back in at 6:30pm.

OK, LOL, I'm back and it's been less then an hour.

At the exact moment that I clicked my mouse to post my last post, the USB port went out again, and my malificient machine mucked up again. Freakin' Frozen.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Frustrated.

So this is where it stands. I can use it for a little while then out of the blue..................

Did you try a System Restore or a repair install? If you haven’t, then you can try this route but make sure that you back up all your important data before you do so. Also, if you’re going to reinstall Windows then I suggest that you don’t keep adding programs that you don’t need, as your memory is kind of low and I see, for example, that you have two printers installed and two tool bars among other things.

System Restore was my first try, however each time I attempted it I was rapidly and repeatedly rebuffed (having some fun with the alliteration thing). I've used it in the past with success, but this time was told "could not restore" or "restore not successful" can't remember the exact syntax.

I do have two printers on here because it's a laptop and I take it between locations. I wasn't aware of the additional toolbar though and thank you for bringing it to my attention.

By the By. Since my last freezup at 5:30 (est) I have gone defraged my drive, and so far my USB ports are still working and my CPU resources seem to be smoothly swimming along.

I don't know if I did anything but we'll see. In the meantime I'm going to keep checking in on your suggestions.

IT DID IT AGAIN> I clicked on the mouse to post my last post and the USB ports shut down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least the computer hasn't frozen up, but I need the ports to be working (I would swear right now, but my year old is watching me type at the moment. She wants me to throw in some emoticons so here they are.... pull hair.gif puke.gif cry.gif

It's generally after the ports stop working that the CPU resources start going out of whack. I'll try to document this in realtime as well....

OK, so I just unplugged my mouse from the non working USB port, and my taskmgr shows the "System" as using 99 CPU and the "System Idle Process" at 00. I'm still able to surf the net and apparently post to this forum, but I'm fairly certain It won't be long before a freezup. confused.gif

Finally did freeze again, 15 minutes later. Had to reboot remove usb drivers and restart again. I'm now using it without anything in the USB ports to see what happens.

Dino
Have you considered the possibility of a repair or clean install? Just make sure that you back up any important data before you do so.

What are the sub-model id numbers of your unit? There will be 3 or 4. For example, Toshiba Satellite M45-xxxxx In addition, as Dino inferred, you got a boatload of junk loading on a laptop with limited resources. I don't think that is your immediate problem, but something that should be eventually addressed. You are bordering on low hard drive space (not there yet, but close) so keep an eye on that-it can cause problems.
LOOKAtMyPC
Could the problem have started around the same time you installed SP3?

Maybe Toshiba has newer USB drivers available since SP3?

Seems to be some OEM computer + SP3 + USB driver issues rising on the net since the SP3 update.
Nono
Hi all.

Now I read this I strongly believe it must have something to do with SP3. I'm having the same exact problem in my HP Compaq nx6110 (all the symptoms, even its randomness -sometimes frozen system, sometimes just USB not working, processor overload, etc-). The processor overload IS in fact the USB driver, but you will probably see it as "system" or something like that in the task manager (at least if you have my same problem). Try downloading Process Explorer, and run it the next time you have this USB problem and the process overload problem. If I'm right, Process Explorer will show you that it is "Harware Interrupts" who is consumig all your processing capacity. If you are lucky, you don't need to reboot: just right-click on "My PC" and go to the device manager ( don't know the exact name of that option in English, but I'm sure you know how to get there). If the device manager does not hang up (in those cases you have no option but to reboot) you can disable (not unistall) the USB ports. After disabling the last one of them, your processor usage will drop down to normal levels again.

Unfortunately, this is only a way to keep using your PC after having the USB problem, in case you need to save things, etc, but I still haven't found a way to solve the problem and have my USB ports working again all the time. I've checked HP but found no driver nor support for this problem, so I cannot tell you if new drvers solve the issue. However, maybe you're luckier and Toshiba has something for you! wink.gif

And if anyone finds a definitive solution for this (for instance, if new drivers work tongue.gif ) please let me know!
