Full Version: Startup Problems-hung Up On Applying Computer Settings

Hello,

I am having trouble starting up my windows 2000 machine. While each step seems to be taking longer than it should it gets particularly hung up on "loading computer settings". I let it go for almost 15min without making progress. I tried in safe mode and still no luck. I tried in "last known good configuration" and it finally made it to the log in box, but after logging in it sat another 15 min. I rebooted a couple of times and kept trying to load in last known good configuration and finally got it started. However I got this message "unable to create awellknownsid in advapi32.dll". Could this error be causing the hangup?

My first guess would be to just replace that file but I do not want to cause any additional problems.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Joseph

try replacing ADVAPI32.dll from the Windows\System32\dllcache folder to the Windows\System32 in safe mode.

The one you need will be 350kb. dated 12-7-99 if you have one that is 545kb dated 8-29-02 that's the new that the SP4 added. (it replaced the old one) 1st thing you want to try is safemode and see if you can get in and check on the file. It will be in the C:\winnt\system32 and in the C:\winnt\system32\dllcache folder.(a hidden folder) If the file is the right size and the date is right in the dllcache folder copy it to the winnt\system32 folder and then try and reboot. If it's not you can download a copy of it from the net or pull a copy from the win2k cd disk. Use the Recover Console to replace the file.

Download advapi32.dll from:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?advapi32

If all this fails you can use the win2k cd to repair the OS files on the PC.
