I have a HP tc4400 table pc. It came with Vista and I want to downgrade it to XP. Whenever I boot off the disc the windows setup screen comes up and and it show the files loading at the bottom. Whenever it gets to "Setup is Starting Windows" the blue screen of death comes up which says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to the computer...."

I have no clue why this screen is coming up.

One other thing, the DVD-ROM drive is an external USB.

Thanks

KDBAER,

Welcome to the forum. You need to install the drivers for your SATA hard drive / controller during the XP install by pressing F6 during when the install starts. I am assuming you do not have a floppy, if you cannot borrow a USB floppy you may not find a simple solution. In any case you will need to download the Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver from the HP web site.

Extract this file to a floppy if you can get one. I have had limited success using a USB flash instead of a floppy, may be worth a shot. When the install prompts hit F6 to install the drivers.

If you cannot beg / borrow / buy a USB floppy, a more complex soultion is here:

This procedure is not as daunting as it looks. Good luck

Thanks for the suggestion.

I downloaded nlite and created a setup disc with the SATA drivers on it. I booted from the disc and it loaded all the drivers and the blue screen came up again.

It's telling me to check for viruses, remove any newly installed hardware, check hard drives, and to run CHKDSK /F.

I still don't understand why I can't install XP.

I finally got XP installed. I had to use a boot and nuke program to wipe the HDD and then install XP.
