This particular issue has now been resolved:
"it would be really good if latecomers to this thread got the message that the AVG issue has been fixed – there is now no problem with the AVG link scanner and it does not need disabling!

Thank you Platypus for finding that information. And sorry to anyone who had an anxious moment about AVG.
At the sime I discovered the original post the problem was still present but AVG have acknowledged and fixed it now.
