Hi there,

I have recently bought an XFX GeForce 8800 GS and am trying to fit it. It came with a molex to pci-express adapter, like the one pictured here http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/images/Mol...ter-350x350.gif , but the graphics card also came with a warning card saying "XFX does not support the use of 4-pin to 6-pin power cable converters for these graphics cards. They are designed to work with high performance power supplies with 6-pin PCI Express power connectors."

My power supply doesn't have any power connectors I don't recognise, they're all the normal white bulky ones, although I don't know what a PCI-E power connector looks like (sorry I've only recently returned to PC building and am a bit clueless about the latest technologies)

Surely if they didn't want me to use the molex to pci-e adapter they wouldn't have supplied it in the box? So my question is, will using it damage my graphics card?

Many thanks

They are covering themselves so that you can't come back at them for being responsible if you do not supply the proper power supply, try to adapt it, and fry the card or even damage your mainboard. So you take them at their word; probably you can get away with it, but they have warned you. Yes, I agree with you, they are giving you conflicting messages. If they offer a helpdesk telephone number it might be worth a shot. If they are in a foreign country (probably) they may have an email inquiry form on their website.

In the end, I would consider upgrading your PS, but make sure the mainboard you have will take it.

I suspect they are advising against use of a single 4pin Molex to 6pin PCIe, like here:

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...ufacture=Others

The current draw can exceed the rating for a single 4pin Molex, hence they supply the dual 4pin Molex connector adaptor.
