Okay, in the beginning I liked Vista and all it's spiffyness... But about two months ago I was starting to have problems. My computer would freeze, the internet would go down, and all these other little problems. At first I believed it to be a virus or hacker, so I updated and set up all the firewalls and what not and all seemed to be fine, then bam, no internet at all, updates won't update, diagnostics won't run, and certain programs won't start. I deleted unused programs, emptied a good bit of file space and nothing.

I renewed my IP address about thirty times, ran through a power cycle on my modem and router a number of times, uninstalled more programs, and still nothing happens. I'm at a loss... I need my internets! >.<

One of my friends told me to reinstall, I have the disc and everything to reinstall, I've made the files I want to back up, and went through all that, but before I do that I want to make sure I can do something to fix it. I have the main computer, with the modem and router hooked up, and my sister has the other computer that runs to the router (it's a wireless Belkin router), and her computer is having no problems at all. We both have the same model: Windows Vista Home Premium (Desktop). I use a cable modem as well. Um... Oh, and for the no internet connection, it says on my computer that "The dependency service or group has failed to start."

My connectivity was fine for a while but it used to say something on the lines of local area connection only with something else, but I could still access the internet, but when everything started to mess up I had to manually shut down because my computer froze and wouldn't unfreeze. So when I went to reboot I went into safe mode with networking, I think that might be one of the problems here, because after that I had no internet at all. My computer comes on fine, though sometimes I get a black screen after I've logged on, but it returns to normal. I can still play all my media fine and watch shows and movies I've downloaded. I have no missing files that I'm aware of, the only thing is my connection, diagnostics, and updates. And for some reason now when I went to print a picture the other day my printer doesn't seem to be connected even though all the wires and everything is. I even went to re-add it but an error popped up saying there was no printer to hook up. Um, oh and even though I have no connectivity, I went to check all the wiring and stuff and everything checked out fine, saying that it's working properly. Hm... Oh and should the battery light on my modem be lit up because it's not even though all the others are. I just can't figure out why my sister's computer has internet and everything when mine doesn't.

Can any techy help me out? Simplified answers or not would be a blessing. Or should I just reinstall the whole thing? Please help!

I know there are some other problems but I just can't think of them due to it being 5:30 am and for the past 5 hours I've been trying to fix my computer because I'm tired of being basically computerless. So yeah. ^^;

We usually try to avoid doing a complete reinstall around here unless there is nothing else that can be done, and in your case I’d say that you might have a very corrupted operating system due to what you mentioned earlier about deleting programs and such. So I’d say go ahead with a clean install to eliminate the possibility of some malfunctioning software causing your problem; it may not fix your problem but at least you can rule out one issue for now. Most importantly though is that you need to backup all your important files to some external media, and make sure that you have all the drivers that you need for your motherboard chipset before you proceed with the installation.
