Full Version: Attaching Jpg's To Post Replies

I went back five pages in this forum (to 2005) and didn't see anything on this order, so apologies if I missed a topic on this.

When I try to attach a .jpg pic to a post reply, I keep getting a Global limit error. I had this trouble before, and someone here pointed me in the direction of "clearing" this. As can be seen in this pic http://www.d-a-l.com/dan/SAF_Attchmnts.jpg I'm nowhere near a limit, yet I can't attach a pic.

Do I have to delete every pic I attach the day after someone sees it in a reply so I can attach a pic to some new reply under another topic?

Mark
I suspect you are trying to attach a pic or file that's over the 'per post' limit. The error message may be incorrect.

How large is the photo you are trying to attach?
Dan Penny
I've since deleted the pic as it was "constructed" for a particular post, but I couldn't post it. They are screen shots, generally around 17 to 18 KB.
Mark
I haven't been around since they set up the new member groups, but it used to be 100k for the post limit, meaning text and attachments. Is there any way you approached that limit?

Can you attach a small pic here in this thread to test it?

I'm on my way out the door to work, so I'll have to check into this further when I return.

Hi Dan...I'll jump in here while Mark's away. Go to My Controls (top-right of page) and check 'Manage your attachments' under Options. How much have you used of 'global upload space'?
Dan Penny
See my link in post 1. Hasn't changed.

I reproduced the pic I was going to post. It's 324KB (jpg). (Heh, bigger than 17 KB....)

Just tried again and the exact error is;
QUOTE
The total filespace required to upload all the attached files is greater than your per post or global limit. Please reduce the number of attachments or the size of the attachments.

"text and attachments" is probably why. The thread is now two pages; http://www.suggestafix.com/index.php?showt...mp;#entry213998

The limit for attached files is 100K.
Dan Penny
So does the text of the reply (or all my replies in the entire thread) count towards this number, or just the attachment?

Mark's statement

has me wondering.

Hi Dan Penny,

There's a per post max set of 100k, so attachments and text of each post will cause an error message if you exceed 100k. 100k is quite a bit of text, but when you add an image it could cause a problem. I'm not so sure how accurate the error messages are in this older version of Invision, so it may give the same error message for exceeding either limit, per post, or global.

Only the attachments count against your global attachment limit of about 5meg, so all your attachments in all threads can't exceed that limit. You don't appear to be in danger of reaching that very soon, especially at 100k per post max.

I'll ask the other moderators and admins if we can support an increase in the limits for the more advanced member groups. We don't have lots of resources being we are a free site that has no advertising revenue, but the low number of people in your member group may allow us to bump it up, and hopefully let you avoid the errors when posting.

Hope this helps

Ok, I just tried uploading a pic with that last post, and it's telling me I've exceeded my global limit. I guess we all have low limits set here.

I'm going to try to attach a photo of 75k to see if I can stay under the per post limit.
Mark
Once I upload the pic, it tells me how much space I have left:

Are you sure you're clicking 'add the attachment' before submitting your post? I think I forgot to when I got the global limit exceeded error message. I thought this software was older than it is, and tried to upload the image with the location on my machine in the browse field as I submitted the post.

The second time I clicked 'add attachment' and it shows the limits and status of your upload and lets you place the image into a position in your post.

Hope this helps smile.gif
Dan Penny
I always add any attachments then preview my posts before I submit.

This would be great if it's possible. Sometimes a picture is worth a bunch of typing when explaining things or making a point to a poster. I contribute to several help forums, Moderator at two of them. This is the only site where I've run into this.

I've never seen (or noticed) this display when attaching pics. I may be going too fast though. ;>)

Thanks very much for the inputs.
