Mark C
It appears that I am one of hundreds if not thousands that have been attacked - Seems that it came from My Space during one on my daughters visits to the sight.

The background on the desktop reads:
"Warning Spyware threat has been detected on your PC
Your computer has several fatel errors due to spywae activity
it is strongy reccomended to install an anti spyware...
etc, etc etc...

Additionally, the Task Manager has been disabled and, a shield is now on the task bar and messages appear in a balloon every 3-4 minutes. In between, a phoney windows security message pops up waring that some type os syware has been loaded on the computer.....

I really need someones help quickly - This happened on my work issued laptop and the reprocussions would be bad. So thanks very much in advance!!!! Here is my hijackthis log:

Welcome to SAF, Mark.

It will take a few steps to fix this, so don't expect a quick resolution. But it is fixable, so don't worry.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to the desktop.
    * Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    * When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    * When installation has finished, make sure you leave both these checked:
    o Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    o Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    * Then click Finish.
    * MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    * On the Scanner tab:
o Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
o Then click on the Scan button.
    * The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    * The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    * When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    * Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    * Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    * Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    * The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    * Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
NB - If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

HKEd - I forgot to ask for your rccomondation for program(s) that I could install to keep this from happening in the future. As you can see from the logs, Symantec is installed but totally ineffective in the case of this type of infection. Ideas? Also, I am curious as to how this stuff gets installed on computers. Obviously, it is a web based issues, however, am I correct in assuming that one has to open some type of file ot attachment in order for this stuff to install? My daughter was on "My Space" and opened a "Bulletin" from one of her friends when all heck broke loose and started this cascade of events. On one of our home computers, the same thing happened last week as a result of opening a "bulletin" on her My Space site - I simply chose to reformat the HDD. Possibly unelated, but I can only reformat if I pation the (80gig) HDD. Please advise - Thanks Again

HKEd
Hi Mark...best to address the partition problem in a new thread in the Hardware forum.

There is no real protection against this kind of infection. As you say, Norton is useless against it, but so are all antivirus programs. They are not coded to recognize these threats. If you get an antispyware program that has real-time protection, it might catch them, but not always, and never completely. Any 'Click here' invitations, even ones that purport to be from legitimate sources, should be ignored. That's the way they get in.

Next step is to download Deckard's System Scanner to the desktop (the download link is in the centre, about 2/3rds of the way down the page). Run Dss.exe and post the log it generates.

Thanks again for your help. The pop up baloon "warnings" are gone as well as the Windows Security Center fake alerts, The desktop is back to normal as well. Is this computer fixed? Amazing.

Hi Mark...
QUOTE
Is this computer fixed?

Yep...pretty much so. MBAM does an outstanding job with this infection. Not all are as easy as this, however.

To finish, download The Avenger to the desktop and unzip it to there. Run Avenger.exe and copy/paste the contents of the Code box below to the section under 'Input script here':

CODE
Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hljwugsf.bin

Folders to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netrax06

Click on Execute and reboot when prompted. Post the Avenger log (C:\Avenger.txt) so I can check the file and folder have been deleted.
Mark C
Again, many, many thanks Here is the results from Avenger. What do you think?

All looks well, Mark. I'd say you're good to go. thumb up.gif

Edit: I just have to check this startup file: C:\BFUSA\SYSTEM32\FWStarter.exe It looks like something you use for work?

HKEd - A million thanks to you!!! I can't express my appreciation enough for your quick response and expert help. You turned a dire situation into a "non-event" No more opening bulletins for my daughter on her My Space site. What's more amazing is that I talked to her two friends that dsent her bulletins and neither report any issues like we have experienced two weeks in a row. Again, a million thanks from Tennessee!

C:BFUSA\System 32 does appear to be a work related file but no idea what specifically it is
HKEd
If you right-click on the file and select Properties, is there any company or other info showing?

From one hit on Google, it may be VMware-related.

HKEd - I followed your instructions and found nothing on any of the properties tabs that would give me a clue what this program is or what it is for. Suggestions?

Hi Mark...click on Start > Run > type services.msc in the Run box and click OK. Scroll down to FWStarter and double-click on it. Set the 'Service Status' to Stop and use the drop-down menu to set the 'Startup type' to Disabled. Click Apply and OK. Locate FWStarter.exe and rename it to FWStarter.OLD.

If you find that you do need the file, reverse the changes.

With that file path, I doubt it's malicious, but you never know.

HKEd - I located FWStarter in the services.msc and found the description reads Firewall Starter
HKEd
Hi Mark...Googling Firewall Starter FWStarter produces no hits. That rings alarm bells with me.

Upload the file to VirusTotal for a scan. Click on the Browse button and migrate to the file along this path: C:\BFUSA\SYSTEM32\FWStarter.exe. Click on Send File and wait for the results. Copy/paste the results here.
