Help!

I have a desktop which runs on Windows 98 first edition

I tried to use USB Flash Drive but would not function.

A friend downloaded the driver from the address provided with the Flash Drive and put onto a CD.

I managed to load the driver and opened/installed driver but the Flash Drive does still not work.

When I press Windows E is shows just the driver.

This desktop has a lot files I would like to put on my laptop.

Thank you in anticipation for helping me overcome this problem.

Was the driver specified for Win98 FE, or did it say 98SE? I think every flash drive I've seen with a Win98 driver available needs SE.

Hello Platypus,

I think you are right. I mistakenly thought one driver was 98 and the other SE.

So looks as if not possible?

Thank you anyway.

Peter

What is the make and model number of the USB flash drive?

What is the make and model number of the problem machine/computer?

The following MSKB article applies to USB in Win 98 Standard Edition;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/191772/en-us

Then try this MSKB article;

Follow the instructions and post back with your findings.

Hello Dan,Thank you very much for your help.
The make is Play.Com and model number of the USB flash drive PLPEN-2.0-4GB-COU-XX
The make of computer is EveshamVale and model number 22-99-OEM-0074622-15475 (Not sure if this is correct number)I know its old but it has 2 hard drives and has been a good back for my old laptop with many programmes that won't run on XP.
If the links mean another download my friend will help me put it onto a CD so there will be a delay in posting findings.Thank you again,Peter
PS Please do not think too badly of me as do use more up to date systems but getting over this technical problem will save me going up and down the stairs as this machine has a great wealth of data.P.

I didn't receive any results for EveshamVale;

Same with the flashdrive, no results;

Download, and install Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) (Connect the flashdrive to the machine.) Then run Everest. Once it's finished loading and running, click on the Report Wizard in the Menu Bar. Save all hardware related pages (the default) to a TEXT file in a location of your choice. (It will default the location to C:\Program Files\Lavalys\EVEREST Home Edition\Reports, unless you redirect it.)

Post the machine information in the SUMMARY page(s) of the report. (Pertaining to the manufacturer, model number etc.

Look for the flashdrive info in the SUMMARY and post that info.

Does the drive look like this one:

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3431730/Play...ve/Product.html

The number corresponds to an Integral Memory Courier:

http://www.integralmemory.com/product_categ.aspx?prid=26

If this is it (a Courier re-badged as Play.com), then the specifications certainly say 98SE.

I found this last week but wasn't sure whether to recommend it. I didn't have a Win98FE to try, but over the weekend at work we've installed the second edition mass storage driver from below onto 98SE, and it's recognised everything we've thrown at it, flash drives, USB cameras, card readers, iPod...

So it could be worth trying the 98FE version:

Nice find Platypus.

I hope it works for Peter, if he comes back to check the thread.
