What software firewall do people recommend for a Win98SE install? Dial-up connection, will mainly be used for email.
I see that Zonealarm 4.5, and Jetico personal firewall V.1 support Win98SE.
Anyone using either of these? Or anything else? What are your experiences?

Thanks..Martin

Hello,

I do not have Windows 98SE, but I can recommend Zone Alarm firewall as I use it on both my computers with Windows XP/SP3.

Personally I don't think you could go wrong using Zonealarm firewall with any operating system.

Yes, I use Zonealarm on my Windows/XP system. However, Zonealarm support for Win98SE was withdrawn with the introduction of Zonealarm 6.5.

So I would have to use an older version (not necessarily a problem - after all, I'm using Win98SE which also isn't supported). I read a recommendation somewhere to go for 4.5

So I'm interested in people's use of Zonealarm 4.5. Is it stable? Is the performance overhead acceptable?

SoftPerfect Personal Firewall will work nicely on 98SE;

My old Win98SE box is running ZA version 5.1.033.000 - I think that's the most recent version that supports Win98.

It does periodically come up with a nag box telling me that a newer version is available, but I just ignore that, as anything newer won't work on Win98.

I’ve been using ZoneAlarm for years now on Windows 98, 2000, and XP; extremely stable in general and not much performance overhead requirements, except that it’s a bit annoying at the beginning until it learns everything about your system.
