It is a desktop model of HP d530 running XP, wired to a Netgear router. Other laptops and destops, wireless or wired in the same household have no problems getting online. So far I have tried:

1) Hooking up the PC directly to the modem;
2) Power off/on and disconnect/connect router with PC restart;
3) Power off/on and disconnect/connect modem with PC restart;
4) Reset modem - but the IP (obtained via cmd/ipconfig) remains unchanged as 169.254.117.95;
5) Uninstall & Reinstall network adapter from Hardware/Device Manager and restart of PC;
6) Unsintall & Reinstall driver for the adapter (Broadcom NetXtreme) and restart of PC:
7) System Restore to a date that its internet connection was working fine.

Unfortunately, all above have failed to correct the problem. I am willing to try anything. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Hi jast, welcome to SAF

As a first thought, I would try a system restore... <Start/Programs ->Accessories ->System tools ->System Restore>

Select a date you know it was working.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Chris, for your prompt direction. Even though I thought I had done a System Restore last night (unsure if restarting the computer immediately after), I'd want to follow your lead and was going to start one again. This time I clicked the System Restore Settings first and noticed the lights on the router brinked a lot more as normally they would do during startup. The computer was able to go on line right then. Nevertheless, a System Restore is the solution! Thanks again.

I hate to be a bad penny like the problem with my desktop, which just won't go away. The computer was able to go on line and worked fine for several hours. It didn't want to connect this morning again after being turned on. I tried System Restore but it didn't work this time. Anything else I should do next? Thanks.
