Hello,
I attempted to network a Win2K and WinXP desktops. I renamed each PC with a unique ID and created a common workgrgoup name for both. After the configuration, both machines requested a restart. The XP machine restarted to the desktop, however the W2K PC presented a dialog box requesting a password for Administrator. During my configuration, I created no accounts nor invoked any passwords. Any idea what occurred and how to regain access to the W2K machine?
Thanks,
Walt

Welcome to the forum, Walt!
What happens when you don't type anything at all in the login box, and just hit the OK button? If no password was originally entered, it should load without one.

Jim,
Thanks for the welcome. When I invoke the OK button or the return key, I receive a dialog box stating, ' The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again.'

Hi darthfur,
Assuming that no password was needed or set, JimHolly's advice should have worked. There is absolutely nothing on the network settings (on any system) which may have caused this behavior, so, we must assume that a password was previously required to access at least one system.
Unfortunately, according to our
rules & guidelines, we can't help with passwords.

Hello Chris,
That's the mystery. I built this machine myself in 2001 and never password protected it; it has never required a password. Yesterday I decided to transfer important files to a newly acquired XP PC. I simply renamed the 2K machine from SYS1 to PC2 and created a workgorup name at which time the system requested a restart. The password dialog box appeared on re-boot. The User name in the box is Administrator. I'm a PC tech and have never seen this occur before. The XP system re-booted to the desktop after the new configuration. Any further suggestions?

Did you try this by booting to safe mode ?
Boot to safe mode and just hit return when asked for a password.

Chris,
I have the same problem in Safe Mode. Have you ever heard of W2K creating this situation before when changing computer name and workgroup?

Ok I know that passwords are a no no so I will make this brief. When you turn on file and print sharing its going to prompt you for a logon and pass. The default is Administrator with no pass. You will also need to authenticate to the XP box when you attempt to connect to it. So it would be a good idea to create the needed accounts on either box before attempting to connect.
