Hello

( using XP Pro )

I have the following Hard Disks. The following is a summary as shown on disk managenent

1. Samsung 160Gb , in 2 partitions

E: 100 Gb NTFS ,Healthy
F: 49.05 Gb NTFS, healthy (Active) ( Contains an operating system , Xp pro)

2.Samsung 400Gb , partitioned as

Unallocated 37.25 Gb
C: 50 Gb NTFS , Healthy (system) ( Contains an operating system , Xp pro , boot)
D: 100 Gb NTFS Healthy
Unallocated 185.36 Gb

Note : right clicking on any of the unallocated disk spaces gives the following options

New partition , properties and help

My queries:

1. Why does E+F < 160 Gb and same for my 2nd Disk
2. I want only three partitions on the 2nd disk , and i cant do it. I want to make it 50+100+250

Thank you for your time

Try the New Partition Option and see if ALL the remain space shows up. You can Cancel out if needed.

unfortunately this doesnt work. It is limited to the size of the unallocated space

Question 1:
E + F are 160GB, as in computers 1 KB is 1024 bytes, not 1000 bytes; so if you divide (160 * 10^9) by 1024 you get a number close to 160GB. Here is some reading on the subject:

Question 2:
You have two unallocated spaces on your second hard drive, and my guess is that they’re not contiguous. So if you want to create only three partitions on that drive, then you’ll have to use a third party program like PartitionMagic as Windows is not capable of doing this without formatting your entire hard drive first, and then create the partitions that you need.
