Full Version: Programes Start Themselves Up And Won't Go Away

Windows media keeps starting itself up and will not minimise or go away - it starts up again as soon as i close it. It sits ontop of everything. I am beginning to suspect a virus. I've unchecked all file associations and tried to remove the player altogether as i dont need it - but it just wont go away. I now also see another programe on the pc that i didn't install, so i dont know where it came from - its motorola sm56 modem helper, but i dont have any motorola hardwhere, and my broadband modem is huawei. i also tried deleting this, but it came back again. do you think something has taken over my pc? i have zonealarm security suite with anti virus and anti spy ware.

Hi fijimember, welcome to SAF

Nothing bad showing so far. smile.gif

I'd bet that this Creative Media Sniffer is the culprit, as it adds media files to the media library, thus probably triggering Windows Media Player:

C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\Media Sniffer\MtdAcq.exe /s
QUOTE
Creative_MediaSource "Sound Sniffer", monitors the drive for new media files then automatically adds them to the media library.

Do not fix it using HJT ! Instead, try to shut it down from the Sound Blaster Media Source control panel.

Let me know how it goes. rolleyes.gif

thanks for helping me! I'm not sure what sound blaster media source is but I disabled media sniffer from creative media player, it hasnt made any difference. Its really difficult to type as windows media player jumps infront of everything and so i cant use the panel behind. Any more ideas????? I dont mind getting rid of it altogether from the pc but dont know how - i tried to remove it using control panel add delete programmes, but that didnt work.

Well, let's take a deeper look at this system...

Download Deckard's System Scanner from http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe to your desktop and run it there. Post the log it generates.

I can't see anything wrong in this report too... beatsme.gif

Download and run CrapCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/
Note: in CCleaner: go to <options/advanced> Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours").

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5 - (Please do not confuse it with AVG Antivirus, which is another thing. Scroll down the page and click the "download the free version" orange button). don't run it for scanning yet, just update it:

Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVGAS
You will need to update AVGAS to the latest definition files.
- On the top of the main screen click Shield
- Click the word active to change it to inactive
- On the top of the main screen click Update.
Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

When you have finished updating, EXIT AVGAS.

Reboot to safe mode

Run AVG Anti-Spyware.
- Click Scanner
- Click on the Scan tab
- Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
When the scan is complete click Recommended Action and change it to Quarantine, then click Apply all actions
Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As. This will create a text file.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.

Make sure you know where to find this file again.

reboot as normal.

Run HijackThis and click the "Open the Misc tools section" button;
- Checkmark the "List also minor sections (full)" box;
- Click the "Generate Startuplist log"
Notepad will open. Post back its content.

Post back the avgas report along with the HJT startup list.

Chris

* Using default options... looks like you did not check the "List also minor sections (full)" box as asked.

This one is showing: c:\program files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe

<Start/Run> type in msconfig (Enter)
Click the startup tab
Uncheck c:\program files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe
Click apply/OK and close msconfig

Reboot

When prompted that you are in "selective startup" mode, "checkmark the "don't remind me again" box and confirm.

Let me know if the problem persists.

Let's try this...

Download Combofix to your desktop by clicking here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Type 1 (Enter) to start the fix.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick or type anything while combofix is running. That may cause it to stall.

Run it only once !

Post back the c:\combofix\report.txt

Thanks again....the windows media player is now loading an error message saying it is not installed properly and asking me to download from the web....this error message wont go away either....its wierd. It also kept popping up when combo fix was running...also zonealarm kept asking me stuff which i had to click on - but combo didnt stall so hopefully its OK. I've attached the log

confused.gif Combofix did remove something, but I can't figure out what may be causing this behavior...

I really don't think it's a virus/malware issue. Maybe some Windows system file gone corrupted. At this point, I'd suggest you to try a repair-install of Windows (also called local upgrade) as described below. This will overwrite any corrupted OS files, thus preserving your data: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315341
