I formatted and partitioned my HD, while installing windows during the pre install scan the message
"Windows Setup Requires 73" comes up and it locks up. Anyone recognize this message?

Does the "error" state; Windows Setup requires 7340032 bytes available on your C: drive? (7.3MB)

I think this is the case. Have you partitioned and formatted your hard disk as FAT32? What is the size of the primary partition?

Hey Dan:
I don't see a post reply to this, but I am looking for a solution to this problem.

I have a theory, I am running XP on my laptop and I wanted to run a DOS based program, but could not get it going in XP, so I though why not partition and dual install with Win98. So when I booted from CDROM with the Win98SE CD, it gave me odd errors which I tried to bypass. Which I think now it has something to do with NTFS vs FAT and Win98 not recognizing it. I thought that I could install Win98 on a non-C:\ directory, though it appears that I cannot (especially one NTFS). Escaping out of it, I got MSDOS prompt in the drive I wanted to install Win98 on, and checked out the directory, it had setup.exe which I ran and thus gave me: Windows is checking the system, then Windows Setup Requires 73 and it locks there. The drive was only 6 GB or so. Any attempts to turn on/off return back to the same message as if nothing had just happened. If I could just get back into BIOS and am able to reformat and start over with XP I would be happy.

Thanks,
Steve.

Hey Wes:
Thanks for posting a response, though the issue I'm having is getting out of the MSDOS prompt showing Windows Setup Requires 73. There is no line prompt, it just displays this message.

If I turn the computer off then back on again, it shows exactly the same screen. I need a hot key that will exit me out of DOS prompt. Then I can hopefully go back and reinstall an OS.

then i'd say to access bios setup and change disc boot order to cdrom first then hard disc etc.. here's a few keys to access bios setup.
F11
Del
Ctrl+F11
F10

motherboard or manufacturers book should have the correct keys to press.

i mean to say to press the key before the dos prompt appears like as soon as the computer starts to boot.

I really don't think a reinstall/or format is necessary.

If you have an XP CD, follow the steps here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291980/en-us and use the bootcfg /rebuild command to rebuild your boot parameters.

Hey Wes:

I just gave your suggestion a try, though the computer does not even go back to the start of the boot cycle. The message I get "Windows Setup Requires 73" remains on the screen and when I power down the notebook, and turn it back on, its as if I just shut off a monitor and comes back. The CDROM does sound as if its working, but shortly stops.

I really appreciate the efforts, I don't want to run Win98, just salvage my notebook.
Steve.

I'm confused.
