Hi all, how are you...?
I am now the proud new owner of a Vista laptop. However, with all the new changes I've noticed, so far the least acceptable to me is the newly named 'Windows Mail'. Generally I have no real problem, except one...! My list of 'Contact's were imported from my old XP Home computer sucessfully as were all my 'Documents' & my 'Favourites' & 'Bookmarks', without any issues'. However, I find now that a problem has surfaced & wondered if you would care to comment & offer a solution please. (I acknowledge that it may be a learning curve, but as yet I haven't found the answer).
The problem is - my 'Contacts' list, (which shows up on the lower LHD side of my XP OE6 version), now no longer shows in the same place in Vista Windows Mail. I now have to click on the Windows Mail 'Contacts' tool button at the top of the screen next to the 'Send & Receive' button. In the XP OE6 version, a drop down menu enables me to select 'send email'. This is not the same in the Vista Windows Mail version, & I can't see where I can 'enable it'..., assuming it would be available? I find this function very useful in the XP OE6 version, but not having it in the Vista Windows Mail version is less than helpful to me... As a result, when I click this Vista 'Contacts' button, then right click the selected email address, then highlight 'Action', 'Send Email', I then get a MS. Office Outlook window come up. It says'..., Quote: No Profiles have been created. To create a new profile, use the Mail Icon in the Control Panel.
This is not a useful help as it seems like I trying to do the same thing involving several more buttton 'clicks' instead of the one, more useful, method. I really want to have it work the same as in OE6 if possible...? Is that too much to ask of MS Windows Mail...? I've attemtped to go to Control Panel & set up these 'Profiles' but it doesn't seem to work for me. Obviously, I missing something, & even if I do get it correct, does this need to be done for each & everyone of my 'Contacts'...? I must be missing some vital piece of important information I think; none the less, I'm a little frustrated.
I will clearly need a 'line by line' instruction to sort this one as far as I'm able to tell...?
So, may I have you assistance please...
Appreciate your getting back...
Bye for now,
Mike

I'm not sure about the rest but in reference to the "action, send email" part opening microsoft office rather than windows mail; it sounds like Windows Mail is not set as the default mail client.
  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Double Click Default Programs
  4. Click Set your Default Programs
  5. Click Windows Mail
  6. Click Set this program as default
  7. Click OK
hope that helps

Hey Mike, what happens when you click Create Mail

Then the TO button and select a contact person?

Are you good to go and ready to start typing a mail message?

Wormholer693,
thanks, your suggestion has proved the "profile' issue to now be resolved.

Steve R Jones,
Thanks too, as this method also allows for another emailing type of function method to be used.

However, the need to have as my 'Layout' choice a 'Contacts' grouping set up the same as in the XP OE6 version would have still been my preference, but as it's not available, I will have to live without it.
Much thanks again guys'.
Bye for now,
Mike

Just a thought, if like me you have the sidebar running on top all the time so it is always visible. I believe you can use a gadget that shows all your contacts in a similar way to the outlook express style.

This wouldn't be the same layout but it would make your contacts always accesible in a similar way.

Hi Andy,

That sounds interesting as an option..., can you tell me how I go about setting that up. Learning Vista & some of the changes from XP is abit of a learning curve for me...
