i have an HP Pavillion m7750n amd64 dual core proc.with a TSST TS-h653l Lightscibe optical drive.i wanted to see if there was a better sata contoller so i went to device manager-ide ata/atapti controllers & to each channel device to search to update each controller,i did it for my eide(pata) channels & also for my serial ata contoller & received a new update for my seral ata's however,(the problem!!!)went a went to restart the system i windows would stop booting.i checked the BIOS which detects the drives and boot sequence & hardware is showing....I then changed the boot sequence from my optical drive to my hard drive but still windows would only boot so far then stop.I then went into the computer tower physically & disconnected the optical drive & set boot sequence to harddrive & after getting so far was able to use recovery manager & get my windows to boot thru...I think there is a problem with the serial ata controller driver update for the lightscribe optical drive....!but was ok for the serial ata harddrive.now prior to this i had updated the optical drive itself with some firmware, but that was a couple of months ago....!note my computer was 2weeks out of warranty per HP.i would like to know since i cannot boot or use the Lightscribe optical driver.if the corruption of data from the controller has now made the drive permantly damaged,or if it can be rescued.somehow.!also if i have to get another optical drive will the updated serial ata driver installed on that channel still be corrupt & unusable?

Hi bigd, welcome to SAF! hello.gif

Do you happen to have system restore turned on? If so, try rolling back to a time before the last thing you did (best done from safe mode apparently for Vista).

If you don't have it turned on, let us know and we'll try something else.

1st of all thx for the reply....i did use system restore...but with the same results,as long as my optical drive was attached physically to the computer it would attempt to boot thru windows but would only go so far then hang up....!

my thought on this is that when i initially ie. a couple of months ago, flashed my optical drive with new firmware.....!that when i downloaded the new updated driver for the optical drives' sata contoller, that somehow it must have conflicted with the drives firmware and thereby corrupted the drive with bad data, making it unusable....that's my quess!

anyway.my question is will i be able to reset or somehow fix the serial ata's controllers'path if it has corrupted data...or is the bad data in my optical drive itself which would render it unoperational.and if i was to get another sata optical drive will it cause a hanging problem also....thx for the time!
