Well i took and old PC apart to day and cleaned it put it back together plug a new DVD-Rom into it and pluged a New HDD with Windows installed on it and when i boot it in it says "Can't find the operating system" and when i try to boot from CD-Rom it just dont say anything about booting from cd and just goes back to the black screen saying "Can't find the operating system".

Is there anything i can do to fix this problem the PC was working before just a bit lound.

Thanks bballuk

Your fist mistake was, you should have reassembled your system with all the old hardware and ensure it booted correctly. Then make hardware changes one at a time, hard drive last.

On both your new HD & DVD-ROM, check the jumper settings on each drive (assuming EIDE connection):
  • Primary EDIE connector
    • Hard drive should be set to Master (aka Primary Master)
    • Second device on the same cable should be set to Slave (aka Primary Slave)
  • Secondary EIDE connector
    • First device, if installed, set to Master (aka Secondary Master)
    • Second device, if installed, set to Slave (aka Secondary Slave)
Do not trust the CS (Cable Select) jumper setting.

I recommend using the Secondary EIDE connector for the DVD-ROM if possible. Reserve the Primary EDIE connector for added hard drive.

I checked through everything like you said and i found out that the second hard drive i connected must of been faulty so i disconnected and it works find now thanks for the reply
