Full Version: Strange Network Problem

I have a Domain with a server (domain controller) and 5 client PC's

2 x PC's run Windows 2000
3 x PC's run Windows XP.

There are two problems.

1) Connecting from 1 Windows 2000 PC (PC1) to the other Windows 200 PC (PC2) is VERY SLOW - When I do finally connect and connect to the printer on that PC the whole printing feature on PC1 just slows to a snail pace.

From the second Windows 2000 PC (PC3) there is the same problem except that it will sometimes print (where the first one (PC1) will always just hang the program until you end task).

All the Windows XP machines normally print fine - but occasionally they cannot print as well.

2) For the PC2 (whome people have a problem connecting to) - the user often turns on the machine in the morning or even comes back to it the next day without turning it off and is unable to access the network share on the server. They restart their PC and all is ok again.

The message they get is "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"

I think these two problems are related so have posted them together - any suggestions

Thanks

This sounds more like its going to be either a DNS issue or a WINS issue...... try adding a static mapping on your WINS server. The other way to test this is try connecting to those machines by IP not by name. Let me know if that helps.

I have tried connecting by IP to see if it improves things and its better but still not perfect - there are still some connection problems.

Where do I go from here?

I agree with whitehat, I have ran into this problem before. I was working in a network that was already setup with WINS so we just inserted the WINS address, but maybe this article will help some http://support.microsoft.com/kb/139410. BTW, how do you have your printer installed (as in through another computer or hooked up via the network? If the through the network, then double check that you have the correct WINS and DNS address inserted, I have mistyped plenty sad.gif

Gotta get ready for work, good luck on this issue

I am not so familier with Wins - could you tell me how I can set the static mapping that whitehat mentioned.

I looked at the article and it talks about multiple domains and trust issues - we only have one single domain and only the Windows 2000 machines seem to have major problems.
