they suggested I call compac - after 1/2 hour on hold with them they couldnt help because the girl couldnt be understood and I couldnt find the number on the back of the computer she wanted
I have dial up - I know it is bad but I am keeping it for a month because it is paid through december

Kayann, you must start from the beginning again. 65K modems that are hardware based with their own drivers are not difficult to install; however, if you have a winmodem that used Window's drivers, they can be a real headache. Which one do you have?

I've seen a few emachines boxes and they've always been supplied with internal PCI modems, connexant chipset. I'm almost certain that the majority of PCI modems are "Winmodems". It was trouble when they were first introduced but they seem OK now.
First thing to check: is the region correct. I've got away with the default but if its wrong windows may misconfigure the modem and is quite likely to mangle the phone number.
