I have a Western Digital USB 2.0 Hard Drive that I have been using to back up all files on my Dell Dimension 4600 Desktop computer. I just bought a Compaq Presario Laptop and want to know if there is a procedure that will let me back up all its files and keep them separate from the Dell files.
I specifically mean the Operating System and software. I plan to merge the data files.
Thank you,

Depends on what you are doin to backup; backup is a generic term that can literally mean anything from a pro tape drive for commericial use (not your circumstance I'm sure) to simply copying certain files over to a harddrive occasionally.
If you are using a program like Acronis Trueimage or Norton Ghost, You are creating an exact image of your harddrive that can be restored in the event of emergency. If so, follow the directions that they give.
If you are just copying certain files, create two separate folders. The big problem is that copying only certain files for the system will not enable you to restore your system in the event of catastrophe, which brings us back to our original question.

I have been using RETROSPECT software that came with the drive. I copied everything from the Dell C drive onto the external HD.
The issue is whether I can duplicate everything on the Compaq C drive without creating a jumbled mess. I think separate folders would do the trick if the Retrospect software allows it.

I've never heard of Retrospect (which does not mean it isn't good!) but my suggestion is to use the instructions, and try their website for what it will and won't do, like I said. Another thing that might work depends on IF Retrospect will allow you to save your image to the partition of your choice. Wipe your external drive, and create two (2) paritions, then format each one. Now save an image to each of them and you are done. You can restore whichever image you wish at any time. Just make sure that you have enough space in each image for a full image creation of each hard drive.
