Last week, Old Faithful Win98SE computer's HDD failed catastrophically, needing to be substituted into my small home net (via broadband LAN and wireless gateway) by another Win98SE machine.

My other two machines ( one XP and one laptop Win98SE ) both continue to net OK and will handle files on the replacement machine, but it refuses to respond properly to attempts see the other machines on its Network Neighbourhood , just giving 'Entire Network', and attempting to open this results in a drop-down telling me 'Unable to browse the Network'.

I've tried everything I can think of and compared settings on Control Panel's 'Network' with those on the working 98SE, and I've even tried an alternative replacement computer.

Clearly I am doing something wrong or have missed something or have failed to do something else !

Help is much needed and would be appreciated.

Hi phil26,

I remember having a similar problem when using Win98SE, Windows ME and Windows XP on the same network. It was a compatibility problem involving the TCP/IP protocol and the OS versions, and was solved after install of the Netbeui protocol on all machines and setting dedicated IPs to each of them instead of automatic ones.

I think it worths a try... rolleyes.gif

Also, if you are using any kind of firewall, you need to enter the LAN IP range to allow all systems to see the others.
